Default Cathayan Army

I was thinking of starting a Cathayan (feudal Japanese-style) army based around the empire list. Here's the basics:

No shields for anybody.

no halberdiers, no knightly orders, no free company, no flagellants, and no crossbows. Basic troops are now swords, spears, bows, and rifles. For mounted units, take pistoliers or allied contingent kislevite winged lancers or gryphon legion.

core choices should be very cheap. Try to minimize upgrades to keep points costs down, so no seargents, no musicians in each squad. However, take a standard in each squad, and model them as con, those backflags you see them wear. I think it would work rather nicely.

Model pistoliers as having rifles and a sword, rather than two pistols.

All generals should be mounted, and should lead a small squad of troops with musician (modelled with a large horn) standard bearer. whether or not these troops should be mounted is up to you.

As to the modelling, there's at least one range that makes feudal Japanese figurines, and even using GW figures you could file and gs the troops into looking decent

I've also been thinking of doing them as a High Elves army. The basics are already there minus the blackpowder weapons, and they didn't see prevalent use until a few dozen years before the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Basic troops with spears or bows or both, as well as lancers. Specialist units with great weapons (swordmasters) and long range artillery. However, you wouldn't take chariots, white lions, or eagles. But everything else fits rather well. The dragon princes are elite samurai warriors who might accompany their lords, the shadow warriors are scouts and ninjas moving ahead of the main group, and the ellyrian reavers are light cavalry who can run rings around the enemy. Of course, with the high elves you'll want to take allied kislevite ungol archers as horse archers, but that's not a problem, right?

thoughts, anyone?

I see no problems at all so long as you are using legal existing lists.

Although I do see a problem in how your basing it.

Cathay represents China. Japan is quite clearly supposed to be Nippon.

You could still have Halberdiers in your Empire idea, they could be Naginata.

I'd stick with the Empire idea over the High Elf idea though. It is already fully established in Fantasy fluff that the east has Cannons etc and that they had them before the Empire, although I don't think they have rifles, pistols etc (as In real life the east was one of the first to make use of blackpowder but not on a scale such as pistols and rifles etc IIRC). Also that is for Cathay, I don't know if Nippon (Japan) do. So I suppose if you wanted a Nippon army you could use your High Elf idea. If you want Cathay, they Empire. Seeing as you want Japan, Nippon is the Fantasy equivelant.

thanks for the input... i haven't looked at a map of the WH world lately, so i was basing it on what i remembered. (BTW Nippon is Japanese for "Japan" so yeah... real inventive naming GW ;D)Thanks for the corrections. I've looked into it a bit more, and the High Elves seem the way to go on this. They only problem is that the normal spearmen come with shields, and that doesn't really fit with the theme. All in all though, you just take Lothern Seaguard, and you're cool. Also, there is less conversion work with high elves. They all wear scale mail, which is what was favored by the Japanese during feudal times. Also, they have better statlines than the empire, which (IMO) is correct as well.

Would playing another ranges minis as my Nippon army be allowed in a tourney? i don't think it would, but I'd like confirmation. Thanks

Nope, wouldn't be legal. GW are really stuffy about it, they don't even let you use other ranges models in their shops.

Still I'm sure your mates and gaming club (assuming you have one) should be ok with it.
