Default Joining a unit... Welves

Okay... I've thought of something REALLY chessy, but anyway.

Can a treeman Ancient join a unit of Treekin?

Ork bosses can join trolls and chaos lords can join minotaurs... so can this be done?

I'm fairly sure it's a no, cause its a monster, but still being a large target it could still be picked out by shooting anyway and IIRC wont get a look out sir roll cause it's not the same type model as the rest of the unit

Page 55 of the rulebook

"Monsters always fight individually; they can never join other models to form a unit, except when they are ridden by a character.

Each monster is, in effect, a unit of one model and it has a....."

The section on characters mentions that a character cna join a monster to for a unit, and stuff about overr unit strength of 5 being able to be picked out, and not gaining the "look out, sir!" roll.....

No where in the welf book does it make mention of anything special for the ancient....other hten his stats and can take spites....

Just curious, seeing as it offers no protection to shooting what so ever, and a combo charge of treeman/treekin is better if they arn't in a unit, ie one can get flank charges and such....why do you want your ancient in the unit of treekin?

Only thing I can think of is annoyance of netlings and issueing a challenge with the ancient.......who would be better off killing outside of a challenge....

Interesting as an aside, I noticed it mentioned 'a wizard mounted on a wyvren" can empire do this I wonder, cause chaos can't, brett's can't, ors get shamans and elves get mages (elves can't do it).......something to ponder I suppose

The Treeman can indeed join units, being a character before a monster. This is why Greater Daemons used to be able to join units (They can't now because they have a rule in the Daemon book that says they can't).

What were you proposing anyway? Is there any reasoning to putting the Ancient in a unit? I don't see any advantages, personally, but maybe that's just me?

Maybe have a Galmourweave Spellsinger in the same unit with the teleport stone... Teleporting treeman!

Maybe not so, page 7 of the fantasy rulebook has this

'Some characters, like the mighty Daemon Princes of Chaos, are so large and powerful that they follow the rules for monsters!'

And in the monster sections they say they can't join units.....the 7th ed book was written after the wood elf army book......

Although you might have a rule I overlooked, it's quater to 12am here and I've been awake since 6:30am so....

If GW hadn't removed their contact us links on their pages I'd email them.
