Default Magic Defense;

With the last 3 released armies all being VERY magical heavy, how have your lists changed? What do your forces now look like in terms of magic defense?

I used to run combat characters, often monster or dragon mounted. Now, to counter the new threats I run very heavy on magic defense instead. Heres how my armies look now at 2,000 Points;

Orcs and Gobs - Night Gob Theme; 10 Dispell +1 to Dispell, - 1 Enemy Power Dice.
Orcs and Gobs - Common Gob Theme; 7 Dispell - 1 Enemy Power Dice.
Dwarfs; 6 Dispell - 1 Enemy Power.
Empire; 6 Dispell + Casket Captain.
Wood Elves; 7 Dispell with Re-Rolls + 2 Scrolls.
Evil DoW; 7 Dispell + 2 Scrolls.
Good DoW; 6 Dispell with +1 to Dispell + 1 Scroll.

Then there is my regular Dogs of War with 1 Scroll Caddy haha.

My main opponents are 11 Power Blood Dragons + 1 Bound. 10-12 Power High Elves + 1 Bound. 12 Power Strogoi + 2 Bound. 10 Power Skaven + 1 Bound. So I do need the magic defense.

It ultimately depends on your army.

In the case of a horde army like TVI Empire, or Orcs and Goblins, one has the luxury of being able to create huge infantry blocks of cheap 4+ save troops that win by CR attrition rather than raw killing power. Most spells, doing d6/2d6 attacks will fail to cause much harm on large infantry blocks and in fact for the cost of a Captain of the Empire, one could get 10 Swordsmen.

However, if you're playing a game more contingent on lots of small units, such as a skirmisher-heavy lizardman army supported by Kroxigors, then dispelling becomes more important...

It depends on the army but im asking what people DO actually take in their all comer lists.

Besides, direct damage spells are rarely the game winners that other types of spells are. Gork'l'fix it and Hand of Gork pretty much handed me one game on a platter. You need Dispell Dice to deal with that kind of magic, and to face Undead.

I have two Wood Elf lists - one's magic competent, and the other has no magic whatsoever, not even a scroll caddie. It's Wardancer heavy so all the important units have magic resistance and through creative use of wooded cover I tend to be in combat in turn two, and I rarely get shot that badly as it's all skirmishing and other armies have rubbishy BS =D

My Tomb Kings has three Liche Priests... that's the best I can do, sadly.

So what does your magic wood elf army actually have in terms of Magic Defense.

Dispell Dice;
Scrolls;
Other Items;

Er.

No Scrolls. I don't like the very concept of Dispel Scrolls so they don't go in my army. Simple as.

2 Basic, 2 from Wizards. So 4 Dispel Dice. I think I've got a magic item that lets you have an extra dispel dice for a turn... I can't remember, I haven't used the list recently and my book is under the table at the local GW.

Here armies are either so magical that you need to do the same to compete magically (not worth it, IMO) or are barely magical. I would never rely on magic. I work on the basis that no one can do enough to my WElves magically or shootingly before I reach their lines and crunch. The best they can do is Vampire Counts speed bumps.

I love my crunchy WElf list.

I've herd that the new undead armies are very magic aggressive but lack any really defense themselves could this be exploted?

Thats a bit off Diz.

Even a Vamp List geared up for combat will still be packing at least 7 Dispell Dice. Their defense is very good, plus their casters are harder to kill than your regular wizards. Then they have a few items that are nice for magic defense too.
