The thing is, I really like the Empire's style of play, but I hate more Empire models. I just think they look ugly.

On the other hand I'm in love with Bretonnian models, specifically their knights and men at arms (which imo looks much better than the Empire knightly orders and state troops), but am not too big a fan with their style of play.

So first of all, how convertible are these two armies (as in, would it be easy to mesh parts etc.) and also will players understand if my Reiksguard knight or whatever happens to look pretty much just like Bretonnian knights?

Well if its play style as opposed to Fluff you like of the Empire then you can easily claim that your force is a border prince kingdom and use plenty of Brettonian parts that you want. As most of the kingdoms in that area are a heavy mix of empire and brettonian ideas.

[Could even go DoW if you arent set on the Empire list]

As far as I'm aware the Men at arms are for the most part one big piece, I think the heads are seperate though, so some Empire heads with feathers etc could be put on. Plus just doing them in a brighter less weathered and worn colour will mean they look less down trodden. Men at arms in shining chainmail wouldnt really look like peasants, especially with Empire heads.

The Bret Knights are fairly customisable, arms, body, heads and legs are all seperate. Again maybe some Empire heads although I love the Breattonian closed helms with none of the fancy stuff on top. Just whack some Empire Shields on them though, maybe the round spearmen ones. Plus you could just say it is a crusading order.

I dont think players would mind. They couldnt moan at all if it was a Border Kingdom and not a part of the Empire in your fluff.

My Dogs of War army is representing a kingdom in the border princes. My general has Brettonian legs on a Bret pegasus with the upper body, arms and head of a pistolier. My Knights are Brets with all the frenchy stuff cut off to show they arent actually brets. My light Cav are pistoliers but with the spears from mounted yeomen and bows from the militia kit. So that should give you an idea on how customisable the parts are. The main problem you would have is the difficulty in getting hold of individual GW parts now.

Is the DoW list competitive though?

Because the last time I played fantasy (which was 6th ed. admittedly) it was kind of boring.

Nowhere near as competative as Empire. It can hold its own though, beats Orcs and Goblins in terms of power.

It's based around knights and their devastating charges.

In third edition I was an Eldar gunline-counter player, and in fourth edition I'm an Eldar blitz-skirmish player. In sixth edition fantasy I played a Dark Elf light cavalry force. My current Eldar army does not have a single unit above 180 points, most of them hover around 100 points.

The basic deal is that I'm not comfortable with tooled up units, heavy cavalry, heavy infantry and the likes, or straight out devastation/charges.

What drew me the most about Empire is their style of play with detachments and parent units.
