Default Necromancer Army - Vampire Counts Rejig.

Right, here's a ruleset intended to allow you to field a proper Undead force!

Army Composition:
No unit with the "Vampire" Special Rule may be included in the army.

An additional Lord Choice, the "Dread Necromancer", is added.

Current Necromancer entry renamed "Dark Acolyte".

Magic:
Necromancers are allocated spells as per the Vampires.
Nercomancers receive +1 to Cast any Necromantic Spell.

Dark Acolytes work as per the current rules.

Point Costs:

To reflect the lack of heavy-hitters, certain units are reduced in cost. Use the modified costs below:

Zombies: 3pts/model.
Skeletons: 7pts/model.
Grave Guard: 10pts/model.
Black Knights: 22pts/model.
Spirit Hosts: 60pts/model.
Cairn Wraiths: 45pts/model.

Necromancer: 70pts
The Necromancer uses the Dark Acolyte's profile and Options, plus those listed here. He counts as a Level 1 Wizard. He has the Invocation of Nehek spell in addition to any others he would normally obtain.
Options:
  • May be upgraded to a Level 2 Spellcaster at +40pts.
  • The following Vampiric Powers may be purchased, despite the Necromancer not being a Vampire: Spectral Form, Master of The Black Arts, Lord of the Dead. These powers count towards the Necromancer's points limit on Magic Items.

Dread Necromancer: 180pts.
The Dread Necromancer Lord uses the Dark Acolyte's Profile, with the following modifications:
+1 Toughness, +1 Wound, +1 Attack, +1 Leadership.

The Dread Necromancer uses the Dark Acolyte's Options, plus those listed here. He counts as a Level 3 Wizard. He has the Invocation of Nehek spell in addition to any others he would normally obtain.
Options:
  • May be upgraded to a Level 4 Spellcaster at +40pts.
  • The following Vampiric Powers may be purchased, despite the Dread Necromancer not being a Vampire: Spectral Form, Master of The Black Arts, Lord of the Dead. These powers count towards the Dread Necromancer's points limit on Magic Items.
  • The Dread Necromancer may purchase up to 100pts worth of Magic Items from the Common / Vampire Counts Magic Items List.
  • Replace existing Mount entry with the Mount entry for a Vampire Lord.

Short and sweet. Comments?

I like the idea I dont think the army could really compete though. I think youd need some more casting bonuses or/and being able to raise/replenish more than usual.

As is, despite the cheaper troops you just wont have the combat punch that the Vampires provide and that is usually how VC armies win combat. One of the best items in the Helm cant really be used here either.

So a big boost in casting/raising is needed I think to make the list competative [in comparsion to the regular VC list]. Maybe even an increase in the range of Necromancy spells.

Really cheap Corpse Carts would make sense too. Maybe even as low as 50points.

Actually, this would be very competitive, with all the cheap units. Corpse Carts ought to stay the same though, they're already ungodly good for their points.

One thing that might be cool is to allow a Necro to exchange any of his spells for any Necromantic spell as opposed to just the level 1 spell. So in other words, he can exchange one spell for Raise Dead or Venhel's Danse Macabre. That would assure you get the spells you really need, because the other spells are just there for opportunistic Vampires.

And trust me, Vampire Counts is already a proper undead force.
