Default To Waaagh! or not to Waaagh! That is the question...

Ok, for a long time I've been painting skaven in an effort to get a fantasy army up and running. However (especially with the new edition encouraging a more horde play style IMO) this is proving to be mind-numbingly boring. There's just TOO many models

A few days ago an idea popped into my head. Namely, a bunch of fur-clad mountain-dwelling orcs. Instantly I remembered the mad fun of my 40k orks and went through my bitz box. I eventually pieced together a rather berserk looking shirtless orc with furs and a great weapon. A perfect Big Boss actually

So my question is as follows. Should I shelve the skaven until I can find some inspiration to paint the ratty lil buggers and raise a Waaagh!? Or should I just truck along with an army that at this rate would probably take longer to finish than doing an orc army from scratch?

I'd say that you should simplify your painting, and then finish the skaven.

How detailed are you painting them?

Fur- Scorched Brown, Drybrush Bestial
Skin- Tanned Flesh, Dwarf Flesh, Chestnut Ink, Dwarf Flesh+Bleached Bone
Clothing- Varies

The most time-consuming part is the skin, but I've always found the multiple layers to be needed. Orks would have a similarly level of complexity (perhaps even more), but the main issue is motivation. I just find ork/orcs very fun to paint

Why not use a modified "dip" method?

Paint with just one shade:

Bestial or scorched brown for fur (lightest)
Dwarf flesh for skin
Some other colour: graveyard earth.

Then just give them a good inking.

Drybrush if you want.

This is what I do with my orks and I manage around 10 in one and a half hours.

Well I've determined that the first step on the skin is unnecessary on the rank and file. See if I can get a good pace going by cutting that out.

I've started simplifying my painting also. One coat in all areas, no small details, for Tau it works alright.

Good luck with whatever you go with.

I think you should start some orcs, if just 500 points or so...

but maybe this is because I play orcs

Throw together a small orky force the difference between hobbie and work is the fun and theres nothing more enjoyable than playing orks.

There also cheap so with 750 pts you can fit alot in with an almost endless number of themes.
