2nd and final Edit:
Ok, bear with me, I have massive ADD when it comes to army choices. Though, now, I have settled on a single army, Empire. My common enemy will probably be Ogres, with lots of Gnoblars(sp?). I like Halberds, so most of my army will be based around them. Each list I will make will be based around Halberdiers, and Handgunners. |

Will if you like ranks of infantry wood elves go out the window. The get only one unit that "Ranks Up" and tend to focus towards shooting.

Ah. But my statement still stands, wood elves are focused towards shooting. As a rule of thumb (read as, take with pinch of salt) I would stay away from elves of all kinds if you're just starting WFB. They are very unforgiving to play and will kick your ass for any mistakes you make.
Also buy the actualy rule book. BFP sucks big time.

Wood Elves are fun, but they can be a little frustrating. There are a lot of cases where your best bet is just to avoid the enemy strength altogether, and maybe pick off a few weaker units like lone wizards or war machines. The Wood Elves can't really do much about multiple units of rock-hard ranked infantry, as without rank bonuses or high strength, they struggle in combat resolution. And they are almost always going to be outnumbered on the field by models that really don't have that much worse of a statline, especially on defense. And their shooting is still strength 3 much of the time, so armies like Dwarves, Bretonnians, and Chaos can take a while to whittle down.
Just be sure you make yourself some forests. When I started Wood Elves, I donated about a dozen stands of trees to the local gaming club. I used the same basing material as on my models, so my Treeman and Dryads blend right in. >

Unfortunately, I am not too familiar with the tree faeries. Wardancers are definetely worth your money, and use the terrain to your advantage. |

Ogres can't deal with large blocks of infantry if they can't flank them. If you can prevent flanking you win. Ogres drop quickly to gunpowder, take a lot of gunpowder and you win. Ogres can't deal with high leadership. Space your heroes out and you win. Essentually all you have to do is take almost any Imperial list and sit there. The only thing an Ogre player can do against a decent Empire list is soften the line with scraplaunchers and hope the opponent rolls a lot of bad fear tests on the charge, if there are Ogres left to charge. Oh, don't underestimate Gnoblars, they may be more of a threat to you than his Ogres. Honestly I'd be amazed if he won one out of five. Any army with decent leadership on cheap-ish models is near imposible for Ogres to beat. They just have a hard time swinging combat res and don't have the leadership to stick around.
Don't worry about calvary or upgrades, just get a lot of men on the board with some powder to back them up. |
