Numerous basic cavalry and troops?

Sounds like empire is the way to go.

Once again I find myself agreeing with Falstead.

Brettonians main draw is their cavalry and not much else.

Empire has a mix of knights, war machines, and infantry with more variety than any 2 other armies in the game.

They have every type of infantry imaginable from elite state troops like the greatswords down to the weak militias of rag tag peasants back to crazy religous fanatic units.

Their ranged units go from simple crossbows to blackpowder hand gunners.

They have mortars, hellblaster volley guns, great cannons, steam tanks, and engineer heroes to go with the machines.

Their cavalry ranges from simple cavalry to elite knightly orders such as the Templars and Wolves.

The characters of the empire are the nobility, battle priests, engineers, and wizards.

The Empire's forces are one of the most pleasing to view and play as there are so many possibilities with them.

They also get the special detachment rule for further customization allowing you to attach a group of handgunners or swordsmen to a group of militia to provide extra options.

You've also got a fair number of options from the Dogs of War - either tailor it as a force from a Tilean city-state or Estalian kingdom, or as your very own mercenary army (the two aren't all that different, in fairness!)

i am now interested in empire,
can someone give me a rough estimate on how big a 500 point or just a small warband would be?

The current WHFB boxed set comes with ~500 points worth of empire.

You could easily have say two units of troops, a war machine, a hero and maybe a small group of knights.

And if you get the box set, you can get a free pre-order for the new edition of Warhammer in September (in some places, at least)
