Default starting a fantasy army, what first?

I've been cosidering starting fantasy now, ever since i watched kingdom of heaven, and i was wondering how was going make an army of that ilk, i.e human, but resembling the templar knights.(powerful cavalry and good archsers, fair footmen(mainly pikes),etc.) And loads of flags, that is an essental

That description is an exact Bretonnian army.

The footmen and bowmen are losing the battle...hurray! Here come the knights to save the day!

Almost exactly bretonian.

In a bretonian army you have

Cheap but plentiful archers all with longbows.
Cheap footsoldiers with spears or halberds, however they're certainly not that great, being about on par with goblins.

4 different kinds of heavy cavalry with a huge number of really good special rules.

They have the best shock cavalry available in the warhammer world.

As always you should start off with the army book, get some core and a hero and start playing around. try some knights and a few archers with maybe a paladin.

The battleforce is a pretty good starting place.

If you want to have a look at Fantasy-based discussions, you could pop over to The Warhammer World here on TO - which is probably where this thread should be moved to, by the way.

If you want pikes, you'll need to get Dogs of War Pikemen (either the ones from the regular DoW list, or one of the pike-armed Regiments of Renown)

Templar forces can be put together using DoW and Empire lists, as well (there are Knightly Orders loyal to a number of specific gods in the Warhammer World, such as the Knights of the Blazing Sun, who are Templars of Myrmidia - the Goddess of the Art and Science of War, who is worshipped mostly in Tilea and Estalia. On that note, Tilean forces are easily represented by Dogs of War armies, so one could make Heavy Cavalry - or the Voland's Ventors Regiment of Renown - done up as Templars to whichever god you wish them to follow)
