Default Skaven-advice needed

well,u all know im collecting lizardmen, but,as secondary choice i have chosen Skaven.

the theme of my army are going to be "ninja" based, inspiration from Splinter(ninja rat from turtles :P).

my GFs brother who play fantasy, told me that night runners fit in well, uppgrading throwing stars?. and clanrats are mandatory. i will convert a hero. he said that i should start with a hero and clanrats, and a unit of night runners if i want. and that a unit of clanrats are needed for each other unit i add.

Rattling guns...burst cannons will be used for converting!. that makes them look more high tech, like the samurai/ninja way. i think it could work.but i will convert alot of course.

any other ideas to fit the theme? or other suggestions to add as a start-up force?

Hey man Skaven are a great army.

Really characterful and chaotic. When things go well they go well, when things go wrong, they REALLY go wrong.

The most important thing to remember when playing Skaven is your biggest strength: NUMBERS.

Skaven are dirt cheap (even the "Elite" rats) so you can have a veritable horde! Make sure you have all these rats on the table because you need them.

ALWAYS make sure you outnumber your opponent (at least 2:1).

Now having said that there's an army list for a Clan Eshin Skaven army in the storm of Chaos book which is almost identical to the Clan Eshin list in the back of the Skaven armies book.

If you want to do a "ninja rat" army this is your best bet.

However if you want to do a regular clanrat army with a focus on Clan eshin that's easy.

Now first off if you do this I think you've misinterpreted the Mainstay rule.

This rule means that you can't have more units of a single type than you have clanrat units.

So if you have one unit of clan rats you can have up to one unit of EVERYTHING else in the army (keeping in mind the special/rare unit limitations).
If you have two clan rat units you could have two of any other unit.

For example if you had 2 clanrat units you could use 2 night runner units, 2 giant rat units, and one rat ogre unit. See you don't have more of any specific unit than clanrats.

Now as for Ninja rat ideas:

Take at least one assassin.

These guys are great and can fill a few different roles.
One personal favorite of mine is a scouting assassin with Warpstone stars.
Total cost: 155 points.
He's a menace to independant wizards and warmachines alike and ranked up units have a hard time catching him.

Take one unit of night runners for every clan rat unit. I wouldn't give these guys throwing stars (Too expensive and you want to keep your rats cheap!)
However I find giving them additional hand weapons works ok. Keep the unit sizes small (8-12 works well) and use them to guard the flanks of your clanrat units and engage the enmies flanks and rear.
Against shooty armies they form a screen to protect your other troops.

Take a unit or two of Gutter runners.
A tunelling team can be quite good.
I recomend poisoned hand weapons for this unit, it's expensive but its also nasty for your opponent.
Again I wouldn't bother with throwing stars for these guys.

I wouldn't take a lot of warmachines in this army because they don't really seem all that ninja esque. Focus on fast moving mobile skimishers.

are there any certain limitations in a eshin list? since i still want those ratling guns.

this is what i want to include so far:

Warlord: converted to have samurai-ish armour

Clanrats: some more ninja-ish changes

NightRunners

Ratling guns

Rat ogres: some samuraish armor parts and stuff

giant rats(are in the rat ogre box)+handlers

may have:

Stormvermin: converted with samuraish armour(quite good concept)
plague monks?...using rats in capes like that kinda fits doessnt it? i may at least use parts from them to mix with clanrats or something to have ninjas in black capes

Personally Ratling guns don't seem very ninjaish to me at all...

However what you can do is simply take a normal warlord list with lots of night runners, some gutter runners and an assassin.

With some cool conversions it should give you a good feel.

Remeber ratling guns are fun but there's SOOO Much more to Skaven than that one little warmachine.

Really don't overdo it on them, 2 is more than enough ratling guns for a 2000 point list.

Numbers are your friend, put as many little rats on the table top as possible!

And don't forget to take a Warlock Engineer or two.

If you feel like doing that then you could also try to make jezziles out of rats w/ pulse rifles. It looks funny, but works with your tech theme. Also a Mutalated or puss covered, or rat infested Ion cannon could be the warp lightning cannon.

If you want your ninja aspect have as many night runners as clanrat units, and don't forget to tunnel w/ Gutter runner( they really are better then what they sound like).

Hope this helps..

I would recommend using warpfire-trowers rather than ratling guns. They are just as devestating, and when they explode (quite common) they are less likly to do damge to your own army. Also, try equiping you assasin with a brass orb if you ever face undead. Since they have no I, it can decimate entire units.

'Tis the fun of Skaven.

However the Warpfire thrower compared to the ratling gun just doesn't hold up in my opinion.

The Warpfire thrower is just to prone to catastrophic failure. Basically if it misfires, which is a 1 in 6 chance its dead. And however it dies its probably gonna take something with it.

The ratling gun is far more reliable, can do absolutley ludicrious amounts of damage and is less prone to destorying it self.

On top of all that the ratling gun is cheaper and has the best name EVER!

I mean Ratling gun! Its a gatling gun used by rats! BRILLIANT!
