Uhhh... maybe because it is much easier to align square / rectangular based troops into neat, tightly packed regiments than if they used circular / triangular / star shaped bases? :

To reflect the more regimented and ranked style of Fantasy, than the looser, individual style of 40k?

Due to the nature of Fantasy the square bases are actually ESSENTIAL to how the game is played. Fantasy is a much more precise game than 40k, where many things are far looser and more representative. In fantasy you can only attack models your touching ect.

Additionally since fantasy models need to rank up in Units the have to be square so they can fit together.

What is the point of circular bases? They have as much merit as square bases...

They are inexpensive and don't get you sued ("my son poked his eye out on your triangle- thingy!")

I don't know exactly what you were trying to say there.

But if I understand correctly what you meant was "If you can move everthing freely can't you measure from the corners to get extra movement?"

The answer is NO for two reasons.

Reason 1) In fantasy units can't turn for free. It takes them part of their movement to wheel, turn or reform.

2) If you measure from the corner of the base to the same corner its still the same distance. 4" is still 4".

By the way, the thing about circular bases was answering a question with a question.
