As the title says, I am thinking of starting fantasy, and I want your opinions on some questions. I play 40k and used to play LOTR.
1) Are the rules very different? 2) Do you personally like it more/less/same as 40k? 3) I like shooty armies. Which is the shootiest? (I take it wood elves but I'm just making sure) 4) Do you like muffins?

1) I'd say yes, but if you play 40K you can pick up on them very quickly.
2)I like it more, simply because the restraints are much more lax on the Core (Troops) Choices, IE you can have as many as you want, but cracks down on uber characters and uber war machines/units quite a bit (Rare choices) 3)Dwarves are a pretty good bet- tons of cannons of various sorts, as well as musket toting Thunderers, cross bow toting Quarrellers, and Rangers which can have crossbows or throwing axes. 4)Yes, especially the banna nut variety

1) Kinda Differnt
2) Tied 3) Well, Shooty armys are 3 typed - Range, Number, Volume, Dwarves have range, but that are expesive pt. wise (used to be atleasT), number and volume belong to the Skink of Lizardmen. I know what your thinging Lizardmen are CC, well NO! Skinks are 7 pt Bs3 Scouts with a two shot poisoned blowpipe, 12" range. Skrimishers, and have decent I (better than the assualt units) they are fast, cheap and effective! 4) I love muffins but cupcakes with the little pink candy on top are the best (inside joke)

Empire might be a good bet, they have some very nice long ranged war machines (cannons, mortars, helblasters) and can have Handgunners which are quite powerful at piercing armour. They also have access to skirmishing bowmen (free company archers & huntsmen) and can also have mounted gunners (pistoliers). Overall very versatile, they have alot of close combat potential as well.

Let me clear this up, I'm not necessairily talking about "they have a few really good ranged units," I mean that the basic troops are ranged (although I know you have a choice for most) and most units are ranged.

Then forget my scaly brothers. They have 2 Main troops, Saurus and Skinks. Saurus are CC gods, and Skinks are like Gaurdsmen. Lots and Lots of blowpipes can bring down even Dragons. (6 to hit = auto wound, followed by a 1 = -1 wound to mr dragon) + chamelion skinks are possibly be best short ranged snipers on the game.
The Mothman.

I personally like fantasy a lot more than 40k, mainly because there is a much larger scope for tactical battles and there is never a situation where you can gurantee you are going to win (such as Tau versus Orks in little terain). Anyway, the shooting in 40k is a lot stronger proportionally to that in fantasy, so it is very rare that you will be able to stay out of close combat at all. However, there is also the added feature of magic, which makes the game even more interesting. I would suggest taking an army that has a good amount of magic as well as shooting. These include:
High elves - very capable units, good shooting and war machines, fast units, very good magic Dark elves - pretty much the same, shooting is probably slightly better overall, not as many specialised units and the magic os probably slightly worse Empire - not majorly good on the average shooting side, but they have a few excellent weapons for characters as well as cannons - these can be devastating. They also have access to a lot of magic, so a very versatille force can be set up. Lizardmen - you've already ruled them out. Wood elves - awesome shooting, though I'm not sure about their magic. Theres probably more but I've drawn a block so I'll post up more if it comes to me. |

Wood elves are the shootiest, dwarfs and empire have also lots of fire power. And then there's the skaven who have quite fancy weapons, such as warp lightning cannon what is like fantasy's rail gun (ahh!!!).
WH fantasy game lasts longer than 40k, and the rules are more complex. |
