Default 150 pt army?!?!?

A friend of mine told me recently that GW is having a 150pt match in January. Yes 150 pts. I think you even need to have a general and that's the only restriction. So my question is, what should I take for my brets? I was thinking something like this:

Paladin, warhorse, shield, lance - 80 pts
11 bowmen - 66 pts
total 146 pts.

I figure few people will bring ranged troops, and that'll give me an advantage.

I would cut down the number of points on the Paladin ( get rid of the horse, lance) as to free up more points for a H2H block as you need at least some ability to fend of an attack in case of being caught since charging the Paladin in by himself still has a good chance of losing the combat. I would take a cheap general and try to get some cheap foot-slogging troops.

I do like the bowmen though, could be an interesting strategy.

A Paladin IS the cheapest hero :-\ Also he MUST be mounted, unless I give him a 10 point virtue, so he'd still be 72 pts, why not go another 8 for the mount and lance.

GW is doing a warbands event starting on January 17th(at least that's when our club is starting.) It will be a warbands escalation league.

During the first week the warbands will be starting at 175 points. As with warbands it has its own special rules.

By needing to field a general, what it means is you need someone to lead the army. A unit champion is acceptable and when the point values get higher you can say he has learned enough to become a hero.

You have to field 2 core choices as well, but for normal bases you only need a minimum unit size of 3, for cavalry min unit size of 2, and for anything larger min unit size of 1, but you can field no more than 10 units.

My 175pt warband is a High Elf warband.

The Dragons of Old
Dragon's flight: Core: 3 archers (36pts)
Dragon's teeth: Core: 3 spearmen (33pts)
The Dragon's breath: Special: 3 Dragon princes (78pts)
The Dragon's heart: Upgrade 1 Dragon prince to a drakemaster drakemasterw/ enchanted shield (28pts)
Total: 175 pts

The drakemaster is my general and in week 2 or 3 when I get more points for my list I say he takes his place as a commander and will upgrade him to a character.

My other list was this, but I felt it was too cheesy and didn't go with it.

Commander w/ Reaver bow (110 pts)
3 Spearmen
3 Spearmen
Total: 176 pts

I felt the second list was an unfair list as it would mean that with range 30" I could fire 3 arrows at str 5 needing a 2+ to hit during my shooting phase.

In that case, I may go with 2 units of 3 KotR. Or come up with something else, that was just off the top of my head.

The only way to get a knight on foot is to take a Paladin and give him the virtue of empathy, that'll be 70 points, no shield, no further upgrades.

how about these 3

Orks and goblins

45pts-Night goblin big boss, light armour and sheild, biting blade

65pts- Might goblins- 20 models, hand weapons and shields, 1 fanatic

65pts- Might goblins- 20 models, hand weapons and shields, 1 fanatic
Total: 175Pts

Wood elves

32pts-Waywatcher shadow sentinel

66pts-Glade Guard- 5 men, lords bowman

72pts- Eternal Guard- 5 men, an eternal

Total Points- 170pts

Dwarves

25pts-IronBeard, hand weapon gromil armour and shield

94pts- Dwarf warriors, 8 men, hand weapons and shields, heavy armour. veteran

56pts- Dwarf Thunderers, 4 men, dwarf handgun, hand weapon and light armour

the Ork nad golbin one is good because there are good chances of outnumbering the other player and i did squish in a character, but the bad side is they will run away

the wood elf one is good because of hte shooting potential with the shadow sentinel in the glade guard and the support in hte form of the eternal guard, but these lack numbers

the last one i like the best (but is 2 pts over so ill have to change that) with the iron beard in hte warrior unit and the thunderers giving supporting fire, and again as above these lack numbers.

what are your thoughts on my warbands
