Default Unit champions?

Getting into seriously building a Lizardman army, I find my self asking a question about unit champs - what on Earth is the point of them? Most in the Scalies army book have nothing but an extra attack, as opposed to the Ld boost or armoury access you get from most 40k leaders.

I saw the referance to the throwing chalanges in the rulebook, but does that apply to regiment leaders as well as attached characters? And if so, is it recommendable for the LM?

Unit champions can indeed fight in challenges. Personally, I just like the extra attack; it can be surprisingly valuable!

Also unit champions get to attack back, even if your front rank have all been killed.

Just think of Champions as being something like normal sergeants, IE unit leaders, nothing more. If you were to gie them increased leadership then they would end up costing more because you would have a large block of men who are gaining a bonus that no one is paying for otherwise.

Ahh, thanks guys - I didn't see the statement refering to leaders being able to throw chalanges or attacking even if the first rank is gone... makes a big help with my I1 troops.

Can the champion be killed off before ALL other RnF troops? For instance I charged some skaven with plague censors and the cnesors inflicted a wound on my champion in the front rank. Does he specifically die (therefore losing my Ld and A bonus) or does a mere RnF get removed from the back?

he can only be killed by a challenge, or by becoming a last man standing. Otherwise, all attacks are sent at the unit, using the units WS, T and As. I think the only exception to this would be if the champion was on the outermost corver of the unit and clipped so that only he was in combat, though I can't verify that, left my BRB (big red book) at my club.

Those are the rules I play too; you can't single out characters in a combat unless they are all that's left.

Can characters in Fantasy allocate attacks?
