Think this through with me...
Imagine you have the most amazing rolls ever, your Parasite attacks, 5 6's. Roll to wound, 5 6's, all rending so no saved. Your opponent rolls, again, 5 6's, so he fails his toughness test. So you roll, 5 6's. According to the rule, you just created a Ripper swarm of 30 bases. The max size ripper unit is 9 bases, but the rule says place the number of bases equal to the number on the die, which in this unlikely (but anything is possible, just incredibly improbable ) example, you just created a Ripper Swarm over 3 times the normal size.Now, just to show how weak these things are, say you take your 30 strong Ripper unit and attack a normal Space Marine unit. 30 bases, 4A+1 for assaulting, you're rolling 150 die! Statistically, half fail. 75 hits. Again, statistically, 1/3 wounds, 25 wounds. They make saving throws, statistically of course they save 2/3rds, leaving you with 8 unsaved wounds, out of the 150 dice you threw ![]() Wouldn't mind that outcome though, considering there's usually only 5 in a Space Marine unit, you just wiped them out ![]() But it's a lot of dice, lol

You get a similar problem with necrons as a necron taking WBB joins the nearest squad, if the nearest squad of necrons is 20 (the maximum) it still has to join so you end up with an oversize unit. It is an odd case but essentially you are able to get an oversize unit of rippers and it is allowed.

Unless the FAQ tells you to stock up rippers until they reach max size and then start a second unit, or split the total in half/3rd depending on how many they are oversized by.
