Default Tyranid Unit Markings

Lost points at the last RTT for not having "unit markings" on my Tyranid squads. I personally think it was BS, as Tyranids don't use squad markings.

I was thinking of coloring the bases like poker chips. Any other ideas?

Different coloured Carapace
Different Coloured Exaskeleton
Different unit equipment
Give each unit war paint

Hope the ideas are of use to you, CS

Nah, Sorck, those break up the consistency of the army. Tyranids don't DO squad markings like that. I think the tournament was a little dumb for penalizing you considering your play Tyranids.

Your best bet would be something like colored bases, but I'm not a fan of those. You could also use the bases themselves; the 'rocky' unit, the 'grassy' unit, etc.

I know Tyranids don't use squad markings but they were just general suggestions (i work out which of my squads are which by having each squad as a different Hive Fleet)

Maybe a small paint mark on the rim of the base?
Conspicuous, but still easy to see if you're looking for it.

Thats really dumb...
I think your best bet would be coloring the edges of the bases, but do earthy colors like green, brown, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Another Tyranid player was standing next to me during the painting competition and told the judge to his face it was BS, him marking me down. That paint scoring system is in direct opposition to the Tyranid fluff.

My Tyranids are already painted, and I want to avoid having to do any major modifications to them--like repainting large sections, such as carapace. Also, my bases are already detailed and I don't want to have to mess with unflocking them.

I guess I'll stick to doing something to the base.

Each squad... different hive fleet... 200 year difference between incursions... huge amount of space between hive fleets... doesn't... make... sense...

That's just rather silly. To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're happy with your Nids as is, then I'd say leave them alone. That really is BS.

If you really do want to change something, the easiest thing would be changing the color of the base rim. Least amount of work/tampering with the model, and you'll be able to tell them apart. Alternatively, depending on your color scheme I'd say do something with the carapace. Either use a different carapace highlight for different squads, or maybe put a few dots on the critter's head; the number of dots signifying what squad they're in.

Just ideas, I still say don't worry about it.

You could try putting tiny splotches of red to indicate blood on the creature's claws, none to indicate this squad, the tip of the claw painted red to indicate this squad, and the whole claw painted to indicate this squad. (Make sure the red doesn't correspond even closely to the other colors on your tyrannid)

Just an idea

Best of Luck,
