Default Starting nids

ok so i have decided to start collecting tyranid and i have no idea what would be a good choice for starting an army and i thought people round here could help

i don't want to spend to much (probably the most would be a battle force and codex) because i don't have a job yet (im going to apply for one soon)

and last of all is the battle force worth it, at 1st glance i would say it is but that's just me

It depends a lot of your style of play and your opponent.

After buying the codex, the 3 main options you have are:

Swarms:
You take a flyrant (Hive with wings), some warriors and a metric tone of gaunt and just overwhelm your opponent with it. The problem is: It's a lot of model and synapse creature is a must.

Stealer/Vanguard:
This is the Genestealer spam list, it can be fun, but also require a lot of models. the Broodlord is kind of weak because you must take a retenue and they can't fleet with him. add a lictor or too and watch them get paranoid about terrain.

Nidzilla:
This is the kind of list you don't care about scoring points or holding objectives: You just want to destroy them and prevent them to score. Flyrant, a metric ton of Carnifii and rippers are you frind here.

1 peice of info, boneguard is right about nidzilla, you have 1/2 tyrants, and (not sure if you know the rules)... but in a game of 1500 or more, carnifex that cost UNDER 115 points, can be used as Elites. (so if u do it right, you can have 6)... the rippers would be meat shields of sorts, however they are not scoring units, so it may be wise to get afew gaunt squads in there just for holding objectives (even if its 1 you start with in your own deployment zone)

Another point about Tyranids is that you can combine the three main strategies to good effect which creates a versatile army. I for instance have a list composing of a Tryrant, 3 fex's, Trygon, 30 stealers + Broodlord, 6 Raveners and 2 lictors- the list is a combo of nidzilla and vanguard styles which provides a versatile force that can take down the enemy and have 4 scoring units.
Gaunts never seem to work in my opinion because you need to build and paint so many of the things along with 2 dozen synapse creatures not mentioning how bad they are in game terms (against Orks especially)

Sorck's got it right about the gaunts. I play a swarm army and I have alot of trouble winning. Gaunts stats are crap, their gun is crap, and they suck compared to gaurdsmen and orks, while costing the same. Then to maintain synapse you need expensive warriors and thropes.

When I helped my friend start nids, we started with a battleforce then added a box of gaunts for swarminess and a box or two of warriors for HQ. This started him off with a playable force that was adaptable enough to play most game types, and helped him decide on playing styles and after every battle we decided what to add next. Simple, but effective.

It's not a bad deal but i would advise that you then by a Carnifex and Warrior box or a Battleforce to give the army a HQ and a nice Hard-hitting unit. (i myself would go with the battleforce)
