Is it really worth magnetizing Hive Tyrants? Or is it only worth going to all the trouble just to magnetize carnifexes?

might be, but I almost always see tyrants with venom cannon and a barbed strangler...I think it depends on your army list...do you use a lot of different tyrant builds?

I've never played a game of 40k before, this will be my first time building tyranids.

I think if you're a new player, it's going to take a lot of playing around with different combinations and different lists to find a style of play that really suits you. If you don't mind putting in the little extra effort, then I think you will benefit from using magnets.
