Default A new member of the Hive Mind

Hey guys, I've been fumbling around with warhammer stuff for the last year after I sold my 2500 pt. mech Tau army on EBay and have finally decided to get back into 40k. After playing a vehicle heavy, shooting only army, I've decided to completely change my ways! I'm going to play a "swarmy" 'Nids army >. I've read a lot of the tacticas (all are great btw, kudos to striogi, and Alc.. whatever the rest of his name is...) and really like how the army style plays. To add to my great luck of finally finding a new army to love and fondle, I have found a wonderful item for a tyranid army from a friend, and yes I know, I'm starting out BIIIIG.

Here's what it includes:
85 close combat gaunts, 2 genestealers (just ignore these), 5 ripper swarms(enough rippers to build at least 2 more but no bases to put them on), 21 warriors, 6 raveners, 2 lictors, 2 carnifexs, 1 hive tyrant,3 tyrant guard, 3 biovores, 4 of each of the 3 types of mines for the biovores,1 tyranid codex, 1 carrying case for these models( I will ship it in this container it is a tackle box that fits the models nicely I will be sure to add extra padding to keep the models as safe as possible).

Now it is all slightly painted (I say slightly b/c the paint job is that of a four year old, but shhh don't tell the seller, he's really nice) which upsets me, but likely I will strip the nasty ones, and paint over the thin little "dino's" XD. He's selling it for 250$ and considering the retail value of all these nasty's is about $856 (give or take $20) I just don't' think I can pass it up.

Tell me what you guys think!

Welcome to the hive! That's a nice lot of units, but the most important thing about a Tyranid army is it's biomorph ability. You should figure out what upgrades the hive tyrant, warriors and carnifexes have.

About the monstrous creatures: If they're incorrectly equipped and you don't have the original sprues it would be a pain to find the parts to convert them. I would ask him to throw in his bits. Pray that he still has the monsterous-creature sized twin-linked devourers that are only available on the carnifex sprues--common builds for the hive tyrant call for this weapon as well. Failing this raid your local bits box.

The lot is lacking some Zoanthropes. These are key, as: 1. Their focused warp blast is one of the better anti-tank weapons us Tyranid players have--S10 shot, and 2. They can give synapse. These are commonly used, and I would recommend buying at least one as your next purchase.

Also a heads up, the arms on the hive tyrant may be plastic, versus it's metal body; you may want to exercise care in stripping the paint off of them.

Otherwise that's a great deal.

Glad to have you around.

Finding mid-sized bases has been a pain for me. The GW base bag has a few, but the bag itself costs 8 dollars, and I find myself in danger of being buried under piles of the smaller bases. A friend of mine told me that Gale Force Nine makes midsize bases, and since we have the army using more of them than anything short of the DA all-terminator force, they might be a good direction to look in as well.

Oddly enough, I am picking up a used swarm army tonight. Serendipitous convergence of experience, indeed.

85 close combat gaunts and 21 warriors, I'd pay 250 just for that!
Great deal and welcome to the best beasts that ever ate a world

Welcome to the hive.
theoritically, If you use the bases as a template you can cut foam core as new bases. it works with terrain why not with a few swarms, not ideal I know but faster and cheaper than $8 mail order. imho
