Well a lot of people really don't consider nids a shooting army. With the new templet rules I just wanted to share my insight.

-hq-
You can field two hive tyrants with the warp blast ability.

2 marine blast killing templets.

-elites-
for 450 pts you can have 15 warriors with deathspitters.

15 tau pulse rifle blast templets

-fast attack-
150 pts
3 ravengers with deathspitters
3 blast templets

-heavy support-
3 zonathorpes
3 marine killing templets.
2 carnifexs with deathspitters and barbed strangler.

so in a 2000pt army you can easily have 25 blast templets and 2 large blast templets. But the scary thing is you can mix it up to add more large and drop some small.

The new template rules in 5th edition really are a boon for nids! So much so that I recently started a shooty tyranid army because it is just awesome.

In more detail:
Blasts are now place and scatter, no more need for the roll to hit. This makes units like warriors and carnifex much more effective. Plus, partial coverage by the blast marker always counts as a hit!

There is a .333 chance to hit on target.
If it scatters, the chance for partial on original target (and likely hit others in squad) is
BS2 3" blast = .17
BS3 3" blast = .28
BS2 5" blast = .28
BS3 5" blast = .42
This greatly increases the damage output of deathspitters and barbed stranglers.

In 4th edition shooty units typically required enhanced senses if the gun wasn't twin-linked, now we can enjoy increased efficiency at cost.

I'm planning on running some zoanthropes, biovores with acid spores, warriors with deathspitters and a strangler, and some strangle fexes, just to keep the enemy spread out. Then flank with scuttling genestealers and a shooty flyrant as a killing blow.

i had lots of luck against orks with templates in my first 5th ed game. it was great, i actually felt as though my warriors and sniperfex could do significant damage. it was great.

I don't know why but i don't see how the new rules are good for blast weapons in general?
For when I play my tau if I do a submutions shot it usually drifts and does not hit were I want it to. Wouldn't this be the same for Nids, and there blast weapons? Granted I just started playing nids but it just seems like it would be alot harder to hit the group your looking for

The whole thing about the templates for the nids is the bs of 3. In the 4th edition you only hit 50% of the time. In 5th you hit about 33% of the time and you scatter. Meaning that you will always lay down a template.

In horde armies if you scatter of your intended target you still bound to hit another unit. Also the plus side if the template hit you than you're hit. There are no partial hits anymore. So no more 1 or 2 hits and 2 partials. It will be 3 to 4 hits.
