Hello,
I have a question that some of you may be able to help me with. Having found out about the fifth edition rule that allows you to use a unit as cover, I thought about putting spinegaunts in front of my warriors with Deathspitters and Barbed Stranglers. It would give them mobile cover (4+ save!) and would save me 3 points each because I wouldn't need the Extended Carapace Biomorph. Unfortunately, the rule states that any unit friend or foe would provide a cover save. Does this mean that the enemy will get a cover save from my Deathspitters and BS's? Remember that they are blast weapons and that I will be firing through a unit of Spinegaunts. Thanks a bunch, -Lord of the Pit |

Yes you give the target unit a cover save of 4+, also the carapace is kind of neccisary for when they get into CC, which they are more than likely to do now with units running all over the table.

Yep. Give and take. Meatshields in 5th edition are great for close combat units, but not so good for ranged units. Better to simply deploy them in cover.

I think we make out the best with the 4+ cover rule because most of the time our armor is worse than our opponent. So what if they get a 4+ cover from deathspitters or barbed stranglers? They're only AP 5 so only guard or orks would get their saves denied, but with the addition of anything being touched by the template being a full hit, I think this will make them even better than they are now, anyway.
I'd say stick with it, and I dont think shooty warriors should be in combat anyway, I think they're just adept at covering themselves just in case - most of the time you're gonna want to use their ranged weapons anyway, so there's no point in running them unless they're solely devoted to close combat. |
