Default Starting Tyranids...where to go?

So as it turns out much to my suprise, my cousin fell out of the hobby and gave me his battle force. All are primed black, and some of the gaunts weapons are mixed and matched ( ie 1 scything talon, 1 spine fist ) so there are some repairs to be made.

any way, i was wondering on how i should expand this army to 1000pts. I like to keep a balance between combat and shooting, but with nid's....i'm not sure where i should go...usually i play defensive.

Is it even possible to play a defensive Tyranid list??

Any way, I plan on using the gaunts and genestealers for sure, but until i can get a hold of the codex and figure out what exactly was given to the warriors i don't think i'll plan on using them :

all help is welcomed and appreciated.

I wouldn't play to defensive with 'nids. They are a huge charge up there and in your face army.

If you do play defensive you should look at biovores. They have a nice long range and can shoot at things while they are hiding.

If you want cover fire from your CC units things with barbed stranglers and venom cannons work wonders. I use to have one sniper fex to hold in the background laying down fire while my army moves in closer. You might want to think about having small squads of warriors with a barbed strangler for that also.

Warriors are a nice support roll for the rest of your little guys. Maybe picking up a tyrant would be useful also.
