Hive Fleet Varan – Shock Brood

[HQ] HQ 1:Hive Tyrant x1: 182 - Winged - Toxin Sacs - Scything Talons x2 - Adrenal Glands (WS) - Warp Field
[ELITES] Elite 1: Lictors x2: 160 Elite 2: Warriors x3: 123 - Rending Claws - Scything Talons - Adrenal Glands (I) - Adrenal Glands (WS) - Extended Carapace - Leaping - Symbiote Rippers
[TROOPS] Troops 1: Genestealer Brood x8: 128 Troops 2: Genestealer Brood x8: 128 Troops 3: Genestealer Brood x8: 128
[HEAVY SUPPORT] Heavy Support 1: Carnifex: 151 - Venom Cannon - Barbed Strangler - Enhanced Senses - Flesh Hooks
Army Total: 1000

This is an assault oriented list. The exception is the carnifex that lends cover fire and is able to engage tanks/skimmers. Synapse is not an issue. The intent of this list is for the Tyrant to move ahead of the Genestealers on one of the flanks with the carnifex on the other flank. The Genestealers and Warriors are fast enough to respond to assist what the Tyrant takes on or choose another target. Lictors will confound deployment and cause general paranoia about being in cover. I have also been able to pop tanks with my Lictors, hitting the rear armour (this actually works quite well). Part of me was thinking that winged warriors would be better (ie. Getting to objectives, etc.). I guess I can change if I feel the need. The other thing that I thought about was a Broodlord with 5 Genestealers for HQ instead of the Tyrant. I chose against it due to the better movement and durability of the Tyrant. I would be interested to hear what you think, especially about the Warriors because I have never used this set up before on them. |

I like everything except the warriors.
I would replace them with Gargoyles or Raveners, either one will work better. 3 Raveners with scything Talons, taken as three separate fast attack choices would work very well, and could work to either support genestealers or the hive tyrant. Alternatively a squad of 10 Gargoyles would make an ideal bodyguard for the tyrant. Just move them up as fast as possible and shove them right down an opponents throat. By the time they're dead the heavy hitters will be in combat.

I like the Gargoyle idea though, keeps a sort of 'theme' with the Tyrant. Maybe I'll proxy with my termagaunts to see how they do. I've never played with Raveners. They have never appealed to me (more the price of them...). I may have to try them in a game sometime. |

Gargoyles are one of the most heinous units in the game. Their abilities vs. points cost are huge. Seriously compare them to any other jump infantry unit and you will be appalled at what they're capable of.
Also they're dead easy to convert. Gaunt + Wings = Gargoyle. Wings can me made from other models, green stuff or even transparencies with a fly wing pattern printed onto them.
