Default Who Else Thinks This Blows?

Well, now that you're here reading, I'll tell you what I think blows. And that would be the limits on zoanthropes, biovores, and lictors.

I really don't think that any of them are overpowered enough to really warrant it (except maybe zoanthropes - a potential 9 warp blasts is overdoing it, even if it would be expensive). And these limits really restrict the kinds of armies Tyranid players can play!

Imperial Guardsmen can deepstrike (for free) with melta squads, plasma squads, and whatever else. Did I mention it's for free? Drop troops doesn't cost points! Space Marines can have whole armies come in by drop pods! Dark Eldar can have the better part of their army fly in through webways. Daemonhunters could field 9 death cult assassins in the same manner we could run lictors. Death cults have power weapons, too! And while they make armies of 80 genestealers legal, more than 3 lictors would be overboard? Lame! They're annoying but hardly overpowered. For their points many people would even say that they are lacking!

Biovores! Our only indirect fire. And not too good, either! A squad of 3 with bio-acid runs us as much as about a leman russ battle tank. More than a Basilisk. Basilisks get a cannon that can wound a carnifex on anything but, and punch through a space marines armor. We get indirect that can wound a space marine as well as a hormagaunt can wound a space marine, and the smaller blast to boot. And this costs us more! They aren't overpowered. Why is there a limit on them? Wouldn't it be cool to field 9 of them? I'd venture to say that it'd be excellent. Fun, not overpowered, and it would make a spore mine barrage army with spore cyst elite fexes totally fun. It'd probably be totally weak? Why is there a limit on these guys?

And Zoanthropes. This, I can understand, just because of warp blast. But even then, how detrimental would it be? Tyranids have one source for AP3 and AP2 weaponry. We struggle with destroying tanks. I have nightmares about Mech Tau armies taunting me. These guys are expensive and no more accurate than a normal gaunt. Space Marines can take lascannons and plasma guns in every squad. Tau could run 9 broadsides if they wanted. Broadsides that hit more often with better, longer ranged guns. They can even take shield drones to keep them lasting even longer!

Oh well.

I happen to love Lictors, so yeah it blows.

I like sticking to swarms, but i do wish i could use more carnifexes. The hive guard is a good sit in, though.

Deraj brings up a good point, though the way he worded it is not so good. I think being able to take 6 carnifexes is fine. More would be overboard, but the point is that you have that option and you have that versatility.

What I don't get is why they think average to subpar units like lictors and biovores and thropes need to be limited to one slot, while letting us take 8 MCs in a single FOC isn't overpowered (not that it is necessarily, but by comparison it definitely is).

My two lictors would regularly earn three times their point value. More would be cheesy to the ninth level.

My theory is that GW wanted players to emphasize the swarmy-ness of 'Nids, and having 9 Zoanthropes, Lictor, or Biovores wouldn't be fuffy at all. These guys are specialists who don't see the battlefield too often, and are only created when they are needed. Sure it would be fun to play with an army fielding 720 points of Lictors, but it just wouldn't make sense fluff-wise.

This theory somewhat goes to hell with the Godzilla list, though, since having 8 Carnifex's doesn't really make sense either...

Which was my point - if they're going to let us have 8 MCs, then why not 9 lictors? Sure it wouldn't be fluffy. It's not like it's a seer council of lictors though.

Hm, I don't play Tyranids, but my bro does and he dislikes not being able to have more Biovores.

Well we'll just have to bitch about it enough to GW and hope they'll change it in 5th edition!

There are certain things that kick out each unit, so let's begin:

Lictors: They're cool units that if you want to bring nine of them, by all means feel free. They aren't powerful enough in assault, but otherwise I'd love to face somebody with 9 lictors.. Except in Escalation. Nine re-rolls?! That's just... Wrong. In 2500 point battles where you can afford to get 500+ points worth of lictors, then it just gets nasty. Even for two elite spots I can get 6 re-rolls for 480 points... I'd happily take that. Cool by threes, but by nines... :runs:

Zoanthropes: Nine psychic screams/warp blasts... Need I say more? 2+ Saves and easily hidden in a synapse blanket makes this a mean mumbajumba at 65 points eahc. Nine of these will run you a measily 485 points for 9 10/2 weapons and -9 ld... Bring. It. On.

Biovores: Most of the time, this isn't a huge deal because they are inaccurate in most aspects But when you start looking at a 6 game turn, 9 mines a turn, 54 mines... That adds up, and all for <500 points. I would totally bring 9 of these guys if I could. The sole thing that keeps them from being abused is that they can't be brought in huge numbers so their power is limited. If I can bring nine of these, I can essentially keep a section of the board partioned off from me, and stop the enemy from effectively assaulting me, or at least shooting at me. Walking through 20+ spore mines... Ehhh, not safe!
