what makes a good base for items of scenery?

Default what makes a good base for items of scenery?

what is a good starting material for mounting scenery, untill now ive just been using card, but this tends to go soft when filler is aplied ive also tried wood but its always far to thick. any ideas on what might be suitable? and where to get if from too would be good

Maybe you should try some foamboard- you can get it from craft/office stores, or your local supermarket might give you some for free, from their hanging signs
It is good because it doesnt warp too easily, and can be cut with ease

I use 1/4" and 1/8" hardboard, some places call it masonite. Make sure you get the kind that is smooth on both sides. it only costs about $8.00 for a 4x8 sheet. I use it to base all of my pieces.

Masonite is really good. I heard that glue doesn't warp it either.

MDF

(Medium dencity fiberboard) comes in thicknesses of 5 mm and was just about designed for this sort of thing. You can sand sown the edges so it doesn't have any "steps" on the board, it also doesn't warp.

Masonite is okay, but IMO MDF is better.

If all else fails you could get ply wood, but it isn't very good for this sort of thing.

I strongly recommend the MDF.
