Default Why does GW charge 8 dollars for sand?

I refuse to pay 8 Canadian for a small bag of sand. Could anyone give me any good alternatives of clean sand or sand like substance I can buy?

Go to your local hobby store. They will have a greater range of flock (including static grass, sand and gravel) in bigger bags, for less. Virtually any hobby store will do, but look for model railway suppliers particularly. I've never bought flock from GW, and I'm in no rush to do so.

If you live near a beach just pilfer some sand from them. Or go to Home Depot or Lowes and by a bag of play sand. Be sure to let it air dry for about a week to lose the moisture. Also any decent hobby shop sells Woodland Scenics products which are also good. GW terrain products suck and are overpriced beyond reason.

GW sand is expensive and funky looking IMO. Sandbox sand is super cheap (about $4 US for 50 lbs of the stuff around here) and typically quite fine. You just need to let it air out in a small container as someone mentioned.

Beach sand works well for a heavier grain but can have a lot of unwanted debris in it. I generally sift it very well and then mix it into my sandbox sand to give my bases a less uniform texture.

Aquarium stone (or sand) is also very useful.

I have a bunch of woodland scenics flock but have never bothered paying for the sand since it's still pretty expensive compared to the sandbox stuff. I do like using the fine grey gravel for adding a few stones & debris to my flock, particularly for urban bases.

Woah, I forgot I had a creek behind my house! I can get all the sand want from it.

BTW: To clean sand from little grimies and other things, wash it, put in a cast iron skillet, and bake for 30 min. on 375. Kills the gross things.
