Default Some Questions

So I am making my first gaming table, and I have some questions:

1. Is there anything I can use in replace of milliput that is sold in Canada and works as well?

2. How do you apply static grass to a large area like your gaming table that's 6' by 4'. How much static grass will I need to do that and where can I get it?

3. Where can I get good looking trees, prepainted for cheap?

4. Anyone have any ideas on how to add detachable or folding legs to the plywood and frame table?

5. Is there a way I could make a table with just hills, trees and static grass look rainy and eerie?

1. I don't know what milliput is, sorry :-[

2. From GW i'd say 2 or 3 bags should be fine.

3. From a modeling shop, won't be too hard.

4. Cut each leg in half and attach hinges?

5. Paint puddles and then put a layer of PVA over them and will look rainy.

Hope it helps.

I'm going to copy Shadow :P

1. I'm affraid I don't know what milliput is, either, although something's telling me it's gravel. Get sand from a hobby store, cover the board in glue, and paint the sand a gravel colour. It should look fine. ;D You can also buy a special spray from GW called "Roughcoat" which makes a surface nice and rough, hence the name; "Roughcoat" ;D

2. Here come hobby stores to the rescue, again. :P You can get big sheets of flock from any hobby store worth it's salt. Sheet flock is basically a long sheet of paper that has static grass on it ^^ Just cut out the needed amount, and glue it to the table ^^ Alternatively, for smaller patches of grass, you could buy tubs of it from hobby stores. Again, glue it to the table, but sprinkle it on. Like magic dust!

3. Yeah, as shadow said, hobby stores. And I mean any hobby store. If it doesn't even have trees, then you should never set foot in there again. :P The Hornby Trainset trees are quite good, if a bit small....

4.Now, this one's a toughie... Maybe you could have small slots on the underside of the table so that you can screw them on?... I don't know. :P

5. Yes. Make mud, and lots of mud. ;D Just in case you don't know, mud is made by mixing Glue, A dark brown paint, and sand. This mixture makes a very good mud, and should be painted onto the board around the edges of grassy areas and trees, and of course, muddy places :P You can also make puddles with blue paint, and this amazing stuff that GW sells called "Water Effects". Now, I'm not entirely sure on how this works, because I've never seen it being used, but I do know that it's a liquid that comes in a bottle that makes areas look wet. Alternatively, you could give it a light coat of PVA.

Hope that helped, Ivellis, and good luck on your board! ;D

I always thought Milliput was just an epoxy putty just like Green Stuff... If I'm right, why not just use Green Stuff? I've never ran into any problems with it. Otherwise you could try and track down some Kneadatite. I've heard that a lot of people swear by that stuff.

For detachable legs, I'd just fit two slotted boards together into an X, with the center of the X in the center of the table. You could add a few wooden guides on the bottom so the X stays in the right place and doesn't shift if you bump the table. When you're done gaming, just lift the table straight up and off and you can then slide the legs apart. If my description didn't make sense, I'd be willing to draw a picture for you.

It could be done and I'm sure it'd look great. Use dark, earthy colors and make sure you don't buy the bright green flock. Look for flock that looks close to dead grass. On hills, make sure you've got some erosion going on. For a quick overview on using Gee-Dub's Water Effect stuff, we can thank the serach button and Ct_Drummer_Boi for this:

Mix the WE and the PVA together first, in a mixing bowl preferably with an eggbeater since they are both of different consistency, pour into your River Basin or swamp basin or what have you. Once you have just poured it, it should be moderatly thin, with an old brush, dip into your Blue ink, about 2/3rds up the brush, then stick the brush into the "water" and drag towards the direction where the "River" is flowing this should give the water that and ink that blueish wavy effect to make it seem like its flowing, do this as much as you want. Then mix the blue green and black ink at about 2:1:.5 then do the same process. let set. The water should be very clear with a nice ripple effect from the inks.

Also if you have a waterfall or something similar, (Rapids, hot spring) and want a bubbling effects, wait until it has started to set, and gets thicker. similar to the viscosity of Elmers glue, get a small thin coffee straw, and put it into the water where you want the bubbles, blow into the straw gently. This will bubble the water up, and since its thick, it should set this way, giving a beautiful effect.
P.S. Neat trick, put the end of the straw into some blue ink first, picking up about 2mm of ink, then blow into it (Not the inked end!) once its been placed in the water. I'll leave the imagery of that to your imagination.

I may be a 40k, but im not amatuer at Terrain Making. Thank Warmachine and Hordes for that! ;D
Hope that helped,

1. Your looking for something to use to sculpt features onto your board, that is cheaper than sculpting putty? Am I right? Try Bondo from Canadian Tire, or drywall compound. Drywall copound is brittle.

2. No idea---never done it.

3. Hobby store, or aquarium plants from a pet store. (the plastic ones....not the live ones from the tank >)

4. When you go get bondo from Canadian Tire, get these.

Folding table legs--$20 Cdn.

5. No idea---never done it.
