Heya everyone,
I was thinking about my Fantasy army, Vampire Counts, and with the sheer amount of Skeletons, Zombies (and indeed, just plain models :P) that need basing. So after a while of having a very ugly army, I've decided I want to base them, and find a better way to travel with them :P Now, we don't have a real theme for our armies, and we simply play on top of someone's Kitchen Table, so what would you guys suggest to use as a basing theme, and furthermore, which materials for basing them? |

You could go with the standard rise of the undead basing . So zombies and skeletons coming out of the earth tome stones and the like or rising from the water like swamp or Davie Jone's Locker ^_^

What you could do (muchos effort) is for the skeletons on your front rank do it in nice grass to begin with, and as it gets further back to the last rank make the grass more withered (maybe start using scorched grass?) and fade it out so it's all dead (paint it brown, or just do dirt) to have a sort of corruption/death influence of the undead.

Dead world I would say. Gravel and dried grasses. What im using for my Dead world Necrons is "Coal" Go to a Craft store or a Model Train Store, and look for Model Coal. It should be just small bits of actual coal ground up to about 1mm size. Drybrush as your see fit with either codex grey or bleached bone. Works for me.

When I based my counts stuff I just painted the bases in a dark pine-ish green and put unpainted sand and flock on. I had originally planned to paint over the sand, but it actually ended up looking alot better than I had expected. I don't know how exactly to describe it, but it just looks very appropriate for an undead army.

It depends on what your opponents use and what your color scheme is. I'd imagine a muddy, swamp-like theme, though that could be difficult.
Easiest way to go is some brown flock (dead/scorched grass) sprinkled with some gravel or debris or stuff over it.
