Default Your best advice for beginners!

Hey guys. I was wandering what your advice for any beginner would be.

Mine would be to take your time, and research what you are making, I.E a castle if your making a castle. So right now I am looking through pictures of Stalingrad for my CoD board.

My biggest project is making the map Marien from Warrock for my Kill-Team.
-I find it helpful to roughly draw the map out .... REDRAW THE MAP OUT nicer .. then once again draw the map out with measurements .... a long dull process
-Then you go make the general bases, roads, etc
-Then draw out the building on the base you're using
-Make terrain. add filler/wash, sand,
- Undercoat with (personal preferance) boltgun metal spray.
- Highlight edges and drybrush the walls.

tips ...
planning helps (unless your name is Redemption who has his calculations on cardboard rather than on paper first 8))
big stuff comes first when making terrain

I would say start small. If you build small terrain pieces first you will improve your techniques and gradually you can buld bigger things, Also, this way you will have a rather large terrain collection by the time you get on to making a board to put the terrain on.

(And this thread is a pretty useful thread for begginers I think, Time to use the flag feature.)

I would say make your terrain, and all the small details to improve it. I dont beleive is how you make the terrain as much as how many details you can add to it afterwards..

I would say to get good inspiration before you just start building something. Often looking at WWII battlefields can give you good inspiration.

EDIT: Something else to consider. DONT USE STYROFOAM!!!!! Use other things like plasticard, or even cardboard. Styrofoam tends to look horrible and you have to coat it with floor wax before you can even paint it.

Haha ... wonder what kinda foam you using .... You should coat it with PVA wash and such ... before paints. other wise it might melt in melt in front of your eyes.

I beg to differ.

There's not need to limit yourself to a certain number of materials, you can use a combination of alot of things and produce some really great stuff. I think polystyrene is the best material for rubble, while foam core is better for more intact buildings. There isn't really stuff that is bad you just need to learn what to use for certain pieces.
