Default Sealing Sand?

A friend of mine has a decently nice board that he did up with sand and then painted for the base. He keeps it in his basement since he has room there to keep some tables for playing. It works out well, except that after a year the sand is coming off. This isn't so much a problem for him since its in his basement. It is a problem for me since I plan to make a table of my own in the future and since I don't have the space in my basement to have a table setup down there, I'd rather not have sand in my kitchen or dinning room falling off all over the place.

What's the best way to seal it some it won't come off? Spray varnish maybe? or should I just avoid a sand based base and try something else?

Hmmm, I have never heard of that happening. Do you know what kind a of glue he used. I would imagine spray varnish would work but I think the sand would still come off.

I think it was watered down elmer's glue. I can't say for certain though.

You could seal it using a few different methods but nothing will stop the sand from coming off 100%. Its just going to happen with regular use. I would use textured spray paint instead. I won't come off nearly as easy.

Make a mixture of Future acrylic floor wax with water (about 50/50) and put it in a pump sprayer (garden sprayer). Spray it out on the board. Once this has dried (about 24hours late) you can hit it with a coat or two of Krylon Matte spray to dull it down a little bit more.

Hope this helps.

What i did with my board:
I First Primed it
Then i applied PVA glue
I then quickly dumped a large amount of sand onto the top of the board
(i recommend applying in sections, so the glue doesn't dry too quickly)
I wait for about an hour to make sure it is all dry
After that, i dump the excess off onto a tarp of some sort
then i rub off all the sand i can
Then i mix a bucket of paint with a relatively small percentage of PVA glue
apply the glue ( it might take a lot, because the sand soaks it up)

After this, the sand on the board isn't going to come off, as long as you give it time to dry, and you rub off ALL the excess sand you possibly can. All the extra glue in the paint and the glue holding down the sand from underneath should be enough to hold it for however long you want, I can't scrape the sand off of my board with a knife!

I keep my board behind my bed, it's a pretty good place to store it IMO.

Good luck with your board!
