Default Snow... on Red

So, I've an idea to build a table for the planet that my Tau are from. The world is largely red/red brown (Scab Red armor and Terracotta cloth on the models themselves). Unlike the stereotypical "red" world, this one is not a hot desert world roasting in the sun. In fact, its a rather temperate atmosphere, just everything that is normally green on earth is red colored here. This alone would probably be a fairly simple matter, but I want the board to be the beginnings of winter and have some dustings of snow (Which is still white). I'm not entirely certain how best to go about a light snow dusting (I think a thicker snow would be easier, but I'd prefer a dusting with a few snow banks and such). Anyone have any suggestions on how best to go about acheiving that effect?

My Orphans of Viss'ell are also snow-based.

For thicker snow clumps I mix together wood glue and snow flock (available from most hobby stores, not just GW- look in the railways section). I add some white paint since the glue would otherwise dry yellow. The fluffy appearance comes out when the glure dries.

For frosting effects I've been experimenting with the spray-on window frosting used as christmas decorations. It' s a little light-weight, but can provide some quick, wintery highlights. Good time to buy it now, as it's "seasonal" and after christmas it's very difficult to find.

As I recall the "spray snow" for holiday windows just wipes off though doesn't it?

Perhaps you could seal it in using varnish spray.

Depends on what you get. The fluffy white spray on snow really does just wipe off- you're far better off gluing on flocking.

What I found is actually spray-on frosting (to make windows to appear frosted up is where you usually see it). It doesn't have the depth- it truly is more like a frosting than a snow- but it is pretty durable and can quickly give you some wintery effects.

What I've been using is actually a no-name brand spray from the dollar store. It seems to work pretty well. The speed that you can highlight massive amounts of terrain with a spray-on makes it worthwhile to experiment a little.

Well, bad news on the frosting front. My old terrain that I did this on was pretty beat up when I pulled it out of storage.

Also, it appears that stick-on film has replaced the spray-on frosting. While fine on windows, this is not so good for terrain. The only spray cans I can find now are spray-on snow, which is still crap.

There are some home-brew ways of making crystals on the web, but I haven't tried any and can't comment if any of them are safe for paints. I'll post when I try it.

This is the most common one:

If anyone can find a manufacturer who still makes spray-on frosting, please tell me about it. That stuff worked pretty good and was so easy.
