Default Rocks

There are millions of different ways to model rock, and it is something that is bound to be used in many terrain pieces. I personally like to use coal, as it has a nice sheen and realistic strata, however it gets a bit crumbly. So how do you model it, and what is the best way to paint it? I just thought it would be interesting to start a thread to find out the different ways people recreate it for their terrain.

I use a mix of natural rocks ground cork and such since I live in Pittsburgh Pa (a once major steel town hence it being call Steel City) you can often find a good pieces of slag and coal slag if painted up right can make cool looking meteors or warp stone.

If your using coal it depends on how your using it it would be great for boulders and large rocks for smaller stuff I think model train stores sell black ballast use for coal.

I also have been using fair size pieces of rock salt on my tau bases and have been getting nice result with it

I kinda just do what I feel like. If I feel like going out to my backyard and picking up a giant rock and putting it on a base, I'll do it. If I just feel like dumping my PVA glue covered model base in a tube of GamesWorkshop modelling gravel, that's what I'll do. It just kinda depends. Although I really don't use rocks that much. I'm more of a city terrain guy. Grass too. They're actually a little bit harder to pull off, but I just like them, their end effects are pretty awesome.

I use polystyrene chunks covered in a mix of pva glue and desert flock. It gives it a nice texture and doesn't weigh down the model like real rocks do. Also if you are using greenstuff and have some left over after a conversion you can model the left over into rocks and just save it for when you need it.

I end up making gs Rocks all the time. I tend to overestimate how much GS I'll need :-/. But GS rocks do work well.

Just foam, paint em codex gray and highlight all the "edges". gives a very cool feel to it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys...

For larger rock pieces such as cliffs, someone I know uses scrunched up paper over chickenwire, painted in codex grey with highligted edges like Kettino said. It's a bit fragile though...
