Default Tau Terrain - updates coming soon!!

I had a concept in my head for a Tau sentry or guard tower. This tower was to go along with my huge administration building and raised landing pad, to form a Tau outpost.

With Cangames being a huge event, and no one doing a painting/hobby demo, I decided to pack up a bunch of material and my box of tricks and sit down to some terrain building and miniature painting.

On Friday, I started the basic construction of the tower. I got a fair bit done the first day too. I couldn't make it in on Saturday to support Lt. and the rest of the 40K crew due to family commitments, but I did get more work done on the tower so the day wasn't a total write off.

By the time Sunday rolled around, I finished off the tower at Cangames. All that is needed now is to give it a thin coating of drywall compound and sand it all smooth. This should give it a nice smooth, seamless appearance. With the tower finished as far as I could what with no drywall compound available, I decided to hunker-down and do some painting.

But enough of that... on to the pics!

Here's the completed tower, minus the drywall compound that is.

This is the observation deck, with a FireWarrior to show scale.

An inside pic to show the floor plating.

This is the comunications array on the top of the tower. I made it with a small flying base, some plastic tubing and guitar strings for the actual antenae. The wrap you see on one of the antenae is thread.

The "back door" where the FireWarriors enter the tower.

Oh silly me... I totally forgot to mention that I built two of these towers.

My plan is to have these towers on each side of the main gate.

I'll hopefully get some more structures done for this Tau outpost table before I run out of materials. I've got this huge cardboard ring that I'm going to turn into a Hammerhead/Devilfish hangar.

Well, enough posting for now as I've got to get some sleep. I can't wait to get back to work on this outpost table.

My Tau army is all based in a desert savanah theme, but I haven't decided yet if I'll do the buildings on a smallish pad or if the entire compound area will be concrete.

That is some great looking towers! I'd love to see a bunch of Space Marines try to take those from the Tau!

Really nice pics as well. I'm looking forward to the fully painted works!

Where'd you get those tubes/round cardboard bits? I'm always looking for bits that are circular and I can't ever find them!

Great buildings! If tou're making a desert world then paint them with Desert Yellow and Commando Khaki. And build every building on a separate base, so you'll be able to put them in different positions on the battlefield

For the rounded part did you just take a little insulaution foam and cut it the sand it at an angle. Vary good 9.5/10

DUDE! Those freakin' rock! I'm amazed at how good they look. Very simple and effective.

How'd you get the foam on the top and the base so rounded and smooth looking? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Kepp up the absolutley fantastic work!

Since Valar and Lt. Hath-oway have asked, I simply drew the circular pattern I wnated on the the pink insulation foam. I then, (this is my big secret) cut the circular disks out on my scrollsaw. After the basic ring is cut out, the sides are roughly shaped with a retractable knife. Once that is done, I used first 220 grit sandpaper, then finally 500 grit sandpaper to smooth it all out.

The even shape was acheived by sanding, checking, sanding, checking, sanding, checking... you get the idea. ;D
