Default Where can one get a Sand Mat / Sheet?

Hey,

I am aware that GW sells Grass mats, basically just sheets covered in static grass. Would anyone know if there are similar mats available from anywhere else, only instead of static grass they are covered in sand / gravel to represent desert terrain?

If not, would anyone be able to suggest a way of making a durable one? (I considered simply a yellow sheet smeared in PVA glue and covered in sand, but I'm not sure that that would work... :P)

Cheers in advance.

Why not just make a board/table?

Portability / transport / storage issues - I can't (easily) bring a huge board to my game club at school or to a friends house, it would be much easier to just fold up a sheet and use it to cover a table.

i shearched and couldn't find one, they do have grass mats if you want a grassy land. I'm not sure how to make one though. Just use your imagination.

Model rail road suppliers have them.

How about taking a large sheet of sand paper, and glueing it down to say, a regular rubber mat?

Sound like it might work.

Any thoughts?

craft stores e.g. micheals. They have mats but kinda small so have to use several of them for decent size game. around 15-20 csneach if my memory serves right.

For a protable board...

First of all, WH at school is a bad idea, simple.
Secondly, tell you friend to make his own terrain.

But other then that, sheets = bad, its just to flimsy and weak.

So your alternitive is a section board, 4 1 foot by 1 foot squads of syrofoam, each with sand/flock and hte sides and back painted. These are increadibly light, and can be carried around in a garbage bag with a smaller bag of terrain peices.

Don't take it to school. People who dont respect our hobby call us geeks/nerds and are arseholes. They will break you'r board and armies. Bad idea.

Get a sheet of rubber and glue sand to it? and paint?

maybe

Cheers for the ideas everyone, I'll try some of them and see how they turn out.

I appreciate your concerns. However, I've played 40k in clubs in two different schools, and I've never had a problem. I bring my models and various terrain in a large toolbox type thing and keep them in a teacher's room until after school - nothing bad has ever happened to it. Some guys at my club even keep their stuff there over the year, only bringing them home to paint etc.. - and as far as I know, no incidents have occurred. The non-40k people at my school seem to be pretty tolerant of it.

I wouldn't really agree that sheets are flimsy or weak... I use a GW grass mat at home and I bring a plain green sheet to school (folded up in the box), and they are pretty durable. I liked the small portable 1' x 1' sections - until I realised that I would need 16 of them to make a 4' x 4' playing surface. Simply too many to carry into school (I already feel a bit silly hauling a toolcase thing around :P).

I am planning on building a board for use at home, maybe from 2' x 2' sections, but I would still like some sort of sandy sheet merely for portability. I'm not asking for a board replacement, merely for something that I can spread over a couple of tables at school (or at a friends house who doesn't have access to the space or time to build a board of their own) that gives the impression of desert.

I'll have a look in some more craft shops / model railway shops to see if I can find something.
