Default Flames on a base

Now i had an idea about a sorcerer and having him on a lava base with a flame surrounding him. Ive got a good idea about how im going to go about converting the model but i have really no idea how to make the flame.

Im trying to avoid using green stuff for this, as its a big flame and ive never used the stuff before. I was just wondering if there is any good material i could use for this or is green stuff the only way to go?

How big of base?

If your thinking of a creating a showpiece or GD entry, I would use real fire.
Im accauly working on a new terrain peice, a old war memorial.

*If your stupid enough to serously consider my idea, rember "FIRE HOT!" and NEVER leave it unatended.*

This is a link to a walkthrough to a lava base by Tagsta. It may be helpful, maybe not.

Awesome. Thx man. That post and the link in there will help me lots.

I think im just going to do a lava base now, without fire actually surrounding the model. Thx for posting the link.

No problem, it's Tagsta and the guy who inspired HIM who should really get the thanks! I just remembered I'd read the post not that long ago...

I'm glad its useful.

flames can easily be done with green stuff.. Not sure if it works good on an entire flame circle, but try and do a few smaller flames from the lava..

maxe a GS ball, and straighten out one edge, so you get something of a cone. Then attach it to the base. in the pointy end, use a plier and split the top in 2 - 4 peices. then carefully use a pair of scissors and cut up these edges into smaller edges.

finally use a knife and make lines in the GS to make flame tongues..

There is a guy at my games club... you could say he is almost an uber hobbiest.

He painted his model (chaos sorcerer) as normal and such... then put a varnish mixed with fire retardent in it (looks like matt varnish).
He then based it (40mm base) with a little mote type thing around (cut into the edge just before it slopes down) the base. He finished the base and coated it with his varnish mix. Then filled the mote with slow burning chemical (not sure what it was) and lit it up... looked absolutly fracking awesome!
