Default Tau raised landing pad - under construction

Here's what I have done so far on my Tau city table. I'm starting with this raised landing pad that'll be attached to my administration building. THose two structures will becomr the central parts of the entire table.

Enough on the table for now, and on to the pics.

This first pic is of the landing platform with a Devilfish to show size.

Here's a birds-eye-view of the top of the landing pad, showing the in-laid Tau homeworld symbol.

Another view of the landing platform, this time a close up shot so you can better see the grid mesh.

I'll be working more over the next while, so I'll try to throw up a pic here and there.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

It's cool that you guys like my design. And not to worry Antilles, I'll be adding all sorts of Tau-ish bits to it once I'm done.

I'm currently working on the walkway that will connect it to the Tau building that I'm also working on... I just haven't finalized the look for the deck yet. I don't want it to look too "out there", but I don't want it to look like it's Imperial either.

I know that Tau use combinations of flowing curves and linear lines in their constructs, I'm just stumped.

ANybody have some suggestions?

Thanks Ko'vash and saun of the dead broke pikachu's head! for the compliments.

As for your question on what materials I used... I'll list them for you.

The main part of the platform is a roll for electrical wiring that I was given. ( You know, a smaller version of the ones you see phone lines on. Two big disks with a cylinder in the middle. ) I just removed the bottom disk.

The rest of the platform is made using 1/8 inch think MDF board, which I glued together to make it triple thick for strength.

The grid on the landing area is made with nylon window screening mesh, available at any DIY store in a convenient roll, and the over-lay is thin cereal box cardboard carefully cut out to reveal the mesh under it. It provides a frame for the mesh, while also holding it in place. The pink ring that wraps around the edge of the platform top is styrofoam pink insulation that's been cut and sanded into shape.

I've already got a bridge made, that connects the platform to my Tau building. I'll post some more pics when I get the time.

Until later.

I haven't seen it in a while, but perhaps the landing pad from Empire Strikes Back? The one in Cloud City.

I don't know how many exterior shots you can get on a DVD of Empire, but there are tons of books out there. I always thought that Cloud City was the closest to Tau that I've seen on the screen. You can start there for ideas.

There are some shots on the Star Wars website.

That landing pad looks great though. Do you envision a battle in your Tau City to happen on multiple levels? That be pretty cool with footsloggers marching through tight streets while the Mecha Tau units pour fire down onto them. Nothing like fighting a battle on Home Turf. I look forward to seeing some more of your works!

I'd suggesting keeping the pad (and all other terrain) minimalistic; the Tau don't suit stamping their logos on every flat surface. One emblem, prominantly displayed on key features (eg: landing pads, Aun Temple, etc) should suffice.

Keep it up, it's looking good.
