it really depends on what you play with and who you play.
If you play orks, and your friend plays orks, or something c/c oriented, then it can be smaller. tau and more shootyer armys should have bigger fields.

I play on 4*4 feet a lot. Usually 1000pts, sometimes 1500pts or even 1850. I play Witch hunters and it can be difficult to set up sometimes, biut theres no problem for my necron opponent. Reserves usually makes it easier

our club plays 40in40 on 2x6 boards... can be challenging but rather fun too!

If its urban/industrial, it can hold A LOT more models. One of those buildings has a platform; theres 10 models with room below!

You should have no problem!

1. Safe choice
2. Only if you have a safe place to keep it, and keep the terrain seperate from it (if it snaps, it's gonna be nasty otherwise)
3. Why not experiment? Might be awkward to paint though...

I think you should try the modular approach (four 2ftx2ft squares of MDF), because it's easier to store, likely to last longer etc, but ultimately it's up to you!
