Has anyone made or seen one of these things? I'm going to make one when I finish my army (Both Tau and Daemonhunter).

I think he means has any body seen a display base, where you carry around your models on a sorta diorama style thing.
But anyways, I heard a lot of people bring those to GT's.

Lol, no I think Pfreck misread it..

It's a very interesting idea, but requires a hell of a lot of Rare Earth Magnets. Very good guide there, well documented etc :P

Eh, they are cheap. Like 15 bucks for all of the ones used in that SM one.

RE magnets are much, much cheaper than most people think. Extremely affordable. Check the HH/DF conversion sticky in the Conversions forum for links and discussion.

NO, that's a lodestone. Rare earth magnets are actually a specific type of magnet that is incredibly strong for it's size. Not sure on the specifics as to why, something to do with their composition. A great place to get them cheap is http://www.wondermagnet.com/, although shipping is a bit pricey (almost $10 USD for my last order). It's out of stock right now, but personally I like the 3/8" x 1/16" with the epoxy coating. The coating makes it easier to glue down with a small plasticard spacer it fit's flush with the bottom of a GW base. I use them for all my WHFB figs and put sheet metal on my movement trays. Even metal figs I can turn upside down and shake vigorously without fear of them moving or falling off, but it's still easy enough to pull them off the base.

As for makig the display base itself, I've made some and hepled others make some. First, make a diorama out of foam like you would make any sort of terrain (blue/pink foam are obviously much better for this than white foam). Now there's two ways I like to make the holes, either take a dremel with a router attachment, set the cutting bit to the right depth and mark out all the holes you need to cut, or (if you're old enough to drink) get sloshed and keep the bottle caps. Take a pair of pliers and a lighter/stove/butane torch and heat the bottle cap, then stick it into the foam and let it cool. Keep doing that for every infantry base, leaving the bottle caps in place. The caps are the perfect size to hold 25mm round bases, and most are magnetic to boot so you don't need to get sheet metal/metal blanks/magnets to put in each hole.
