Is it possible to have assaulty Tau? The immediate answer is no. Tau will never charge, and Shas'os generally hope for quick combats, in which every FW dies a fast death. However, if Tau did assault, nobody would expect it. It would be a complete shock. "Are Tau even allowed to do that?" The answer, my friends, is yes!
Actually, this is a Farsight-only tactic. That's right, all of you non-Vio'la septs are utterly screwed when it comes to an assault. However, we true warriors have the option of fielding a very assaulty model: the Ork-fighting Shas'vre.
Think about it. It has 2 WS4 S5 attacks. That is the definition of assaulty. That's better than a Striking Scorpion by a long shot, and it is also deadly at range.
So, what am I really saying? What is the real reason to take one of these monsters? Soften up the enemy at long range. Kill them if possible. Just do what Tau do, but don't be afraid to get close. When the enemy gets too close for comfort, whack them with Farsight and a few Shas'vres. They won't suspect it, and it will catch them off guard. I intend to test my strategy soon.

small sacrificial Firewarrior squad out front, 2 full 12 man teams behind... enemy gets close, sacrificial Tau run up and lock in CC... hoping to survive past his own turn but die during HIS turn.* other 2 teams line up carefully at 12".. waiting for the sac Tau to die/flee.... Rapid-Fire!!

thats about as assaulty as Tau get. Farsight Armies are basically nominal anti Ork armies, since thats where the bonuses make a difference. nah.. no Assaulty Tau... no Powerweapons. (maybe the Vespid will be a Drone add-on like powerweapon...) no 'additional close combat weapons' even!

Actually the only assaulty unit is the Shas'O in my oppinion. Send in a lot of drones and a Shas'O and the fight is most likely yours. The Shas'O can give em a poundin and with a shield gennerator can survive power weapon attacks. The drones just add sheer weight of attacks which is good aswell and hey they are a seperate unit, if they fail your Shas'O has no penalties. Have at em. I try and use my shas'o to block any incoming cc, sometimes even charge when I know its inevitable. The Shas'O is good for that.

Yes, 2 STR5 attacks as WS4 is nice, but not when your paying some 70-90pts for them. Good luck making that back faster then a squad of kroot.

Lets look at it:
Cheapest Possible Shas'Vre with Ork Fighter: 56 Points, I believe. Let's say, however, beceause you want him to be "deadly at range (i.e. something more than a lone Flamer) that the Shas'Vre is in Fireknife configuration - classic and versitile. 75 Points.
Net result: 2 attacks (3 charging) at WS4, S5.

For 5 extra points (80), I can get 5 Striking Scorpions, who you were so quick to mock.
Net result: 15-20 attacks (20-25 charging) at WS4, S4.

Or a single Exarch, for a mere 43 points with a Scorpions Claw:
4 attacks (5 charging) at WS5, S8.

I'm sorry, but you need to get your facts straight - your Farsight list was very buggy, and this idea of yours is worse than that, it's downright foolhardy.

Actually you're 5 points too low. Shas'Vre upgrade includes Team Leader upgrade first at +5 points.

Ohh yes, forgot to add in Ork Fighter itself I think, the thing this discusion is hinged on :-[ - so a 'Vre with Ork Fighter, Multi-Tracker, Target Lock, and a Flamer is actually 61.

i have heard the close range tau stragity every time i see a tau player and heard how its suposed to work so many diffrent ways but really just stick an aun'shi or an o'shavo on the front line and hope for the best
, tau are a shooty army it is there weekness live with it and DEAL WITH IT >
