Default regarding kroot

hey all i was just wondering how can kroot be used to to their full potential ?when i use them they always either get gunned down quickly and are not moblie so they rarely get close enough to do any damage.

thanks for the help

Kroot have a 24 inch range. It is easy to get them close enough to be at least an annoyance to the enemy.

The key is infiltrating. Infiltrate them into cover along a flank, or directly behind cover so they can't be shot on turn one. Assume that you will not get first turn: this is always a good way to deploy safely. If you cannot get them into cover, Get directly behind it.

Your opponent should ideally have to choose between going after Kroot and going after your other units. It is ok if some Kroot die; the important thing is that your other units are mostly unharmed for it. However, your Kroot should NOT be the only target. If your opponent deployed in such a way that he can't hit any of your units, there's little sense stuffing Kroot there. Let his own clumsy deployment waste those shots for him, as he struggles to get into firing position.

Kroot in cover can be a real nightmare. Nobody wants to shoot at a unit full of 4+ invulnerable cover saves, and nobody wants to charge in to 40 I10 attacks. Get them in a building or forest. If you can, get them in a forest more than 6" deep. Then, nobody can shoot them at all, and they can still shoot back thanks to their special rules.

Charging with kroot should only be done to tie up units with lots of nasty weapons, heavy destroyers for example. This is only my opinion, as a charging full unit of kroot gets a massive 60 attacks! That can be a horror in its own right. I prefer not to do it because Kroot are slower than your average enemy, and have no armor save. This makes them lose combat more often than you would think. They can be very valuable sitting and shooting up to 20 bolter-like shots, so don't throw them into combat just to slow down the first enemy that comes along.

They can be decent assault troops, but will lose to marines, necrons, tougher gaunts... just about everything except guard. If you charge, it should be when 1) the enemy unit is quite smaller and easy to overwhelm, 2) the enemy is weakened or weak in close combat, 3) you absolutely MUST stop the enemy from reaching your Tau. Remember also that 20 Kroot in combat can make for a rather massive line-of-sight blocker, so you can't shoot past them.

Shaper is garbage, 21 points for him? He is not worth 3 kroot. Then you must pay yet another truckload of points just for 6+ armor. It will make your kroot 1/6 longer lasting in combat for 31-50 points... (counting the shaper cost)

The Krootox is the black sheep of the Tau army list. Tau have far better things to put in heavy support than a weapon worse than a missile pod. Furthermore he stops your kroot from infiltrating! He is decent in combat though.

Kroot Hounds are an option I would consider taking. They can get their attacks off at the same time as marines. Then you sacrifice them, and the rest of your kroot go. That way you don't lose any attacks. It is a good choice if you find yourself fighting I4 troops very often in combat. However, they only come in metal, and I have more important things to buy for my army before I spend $20 on 4 of them...

I would consider taking a shaper. dont forget he has a bunch of wounds, and 5 attacks on the charge. it makes for a nasty baisc model.

the 6+ armour save is dodgy, but the upgrade is very useful for the leadership bonus it offers.

No, that would be the points cost for shaper + armor upgrade for a minimal squad. He is 21 points by himself, so he costs the same as 3 vanilla Kroot.

He has the same number of wounds as 3 kroot, but only 2 Kroot worth of attacks. He has a built in armor save, and doesn't lose anything until all 3 wounds are gone. So I guess he could be worth 3 kroot if you use him correctly.

But now that I think of it, actually he is not an EXTRA character, he is an UPGRADE of a Kroot already there. So I guess you are only paying 14 points for two more wounds and one more base attack(Kroot might as well be base 2 attacks, they always have kroot rifles.) Plus the armor save. With those 14 points, you could have had two more attacks and two more wounds from two more kroot, but only if your squad wasn't maximized. The armor bonus is basically free.

At shooting, you lose two shots, unless your squad is maximized in which case you lose nothing.

The shaper is also a character, which means he does not get to fight unless he is in base-to-base contact. Also, there is ZERO chance of making a sweeping advance with a shaper. The chance to sweeping advance without him is the chance of rolling a 7 or under on the dice, about 58%. Of course, you have to win combat first...

actually according to the codex a shaper is worth 29 points we were both wrong because you cant add a shaper you can only upgrade a kroot warrior to a shaper right?
