Default A Few Questions

Hey everyone. I'm new to Warhammer 40k in general as well as with the Tau, so I had a few questions after having skimmed through most of the general rulebook and Codex.

1. I'm very interested in the Markerlight concept. However, if I want to equip a standard Firewarrior team with one, how do I go about upgrading one of them to a Shas'ui?

2. For equipment in general, does it physically have to be represented on the units or can I declare it before the start of the match?

3. If it has to be represented, are there specific models I have to equip the units with or can I fabricate them? I've seen pictures of custom markerlights people have fabricated combining a rail rifle with a pulse rifle.

4. Again, with the Markerlight it's my understanding that the effects are cumulative. So if I have multiple markers stacked on one unit, and say I fire Skyray seeker missiles at it, can I use more than one effect for each marker, or do I have to stack all of them onto one effect?

Any help is appreciated, and thank you in advance to anyone that offers it.

1 Theres nothing really that you have to do except have it on your army list that he is a shas'ui and to pay the neccesary points for the sake of clarity however it's a good idea to have some distinguishing marks on him to represent the fact his the guy in charge such as putting different coulour paint on him like on his shoulder pad or helmet etc.

2 Thats both yes and no some equipment like plasma rifles burst cannons multitrackers have to be present on the model as many tournaments operate on a WYSIWYG system i.e what you see is what you get...However there are items in the Tau codex that can't be physically represented like flechete dis-chargers for example so it's bit of a mix so if it can be represented physically is should be but either way it must be on your army list.

3 Thats a little sketchy customization is allowed but it must still be clear or you have to make clear what the thing is and it must not give you an advantage in any way over what the original piece is.

different people and different tournaments can have different standards for that.

4 yes the markers operate individually and for any effect you want so for example if you have five markers on a unit you can use two to boost the BS of your unit to 5 while at the same time use the other three to reduce his cover save from 4+ to nothing or you can use some to reduce leadership or fire some seekers whatever you want but you must declare your using them and what your using them for beforehand.

I had another question if you don't mind. I read the section on the force structure, it wasn't entirely clear to me and neither was the picture. Do each of the stacked squares represent the max number of that unit type I can have in my army? What are the limitations on the Tau force? All I know of so far is only one HQ is allowed.

Long story short, every tournament legal army you make must have at least 1 HQ and 2 Troops. That is represented by the solid black icons in the FOC chart illustrated in the books. There is a Maximum number of FOC Slots available to you to fill as you see fit. As is represented in the FOC Chart, no more than 2 HQ slots are available, thus, you may not take more than 2 HQ choices in any standard legitimate army. Likewise for the rest of the slots, 3 are visible in Fast, elite, and heavy, So you cannot take more than 3 such choices. I'll leave it to you to try and figure out how many troops you can take max

1 square=1 of a squad of choice from the designated sections. (i.e. Elites,Troops, and etc)

Dark Squares are required unit in order to play.
The rest are optional but that is the limit you can have in a standard mission (game). Your army can grow bigger because of the expansion Apocalypse.

HQ max is 2 but, need one to play a game.
