Default Stealthy drone attack!

I've been mulling over strats and considering thinking outside of the square myself. thought about taking a 6 man stealth suite team all equipped with drone controllers as their support system and taking 2 drones each. thats a big stealthy squad of lols right there. Even if its not viable i would still like to do it to see the look on the other guys face... weather its shock or laughter is the other question.

Against big swarms it would be very much viable if you made it all gun drones. The unit would be easily capable of removing something like 10-14 hormagaunts per turn.

However its a unit that is very easy to shut down. I cannot imagine a swarm player who wouldnt hurry to get this unit locked in combat as fast as possible. Not to mention the unit is just as prone to running as anything else we have which is the reason I tend to advice against anything thats more than 200 pts.

I've actually used this before it's very viable or at least as viable as stealth teams are ideally you want to infiltrate this and go first while using every opportunity to fall back even risking jumping into cover for max survivability the biggest shortfall of this is that the gun drones can't use markerlights so falls short of achieving it's full potential.

but Irthedar is right horde players will be falling over themselves to shut this down.

and it's pretty expensive considering their are more than a few units who can easily run them down or make them flee.

I've run this in the past and it is actually a very effective way to shut down a horde army without retaliation from the ranged stuff. If you're infiltrating it, you already have them at their optimal range for their weapons, and its definitely not hard to maintain this distance as the game progresses, aside from running out of board space. Pathfinder markerlights makes this just as deadly as a squad of fire warriors without being nearly as fragile, and it has loads of pinning to boot, any extra markerlights can be used to reduce the leadership of the opponent, which only needs to be dropped below 7 to have a high chance to stop it in its tracks. Most squads out there are leadership 8-9, so its not a big sacrifice.

Keeping the squad safe is actually not as hard as you'd expect. Even with the enemy having some special movement type, having a piranha wall ready to support, or simply adding more pressure with the rest of your army can be enough.

Lets not forget that even if the enemy can't see the stealths, they still provide a cover save for units (like crisis suits) that may be behind them. This can save you a few extra points to use elsewhere if needed.

Sniper drones do the same so putting a broadside team behind a sniper team is also a good way of saving points on shield drones.

Stealth gun drone teams are among the most effective and durable infantry screens available to the Tau. In addition to that stealth field effect, they can actually keep up with vehicles and crisis suits, which kroot tend to have difficulty managing, and bring the odd fusion blaster or two in case something armored rolls up closer than you would like. Also, while this doesn't always work thanks to the ridiculous abundance of frag grenades, Stealth field units are counted as being in cover when assaulted, so they can provide a slightly better anti-assault deterrent thanks to the plethora of drones with I4,

All of those are minor benefits though, so experiment with it slowly to get the hang of when and how to use those tactics. You're going to be putting down quite a few points on this, so while it offers a wide variety of tactical maneuvers, make sure they're applied only in the proper circumstances.
