First things first , welcome to the Tau!

I''m fairly new myself, but i always play my space marine brother so im used to playing (but generally losing) against them, firstly you have to think "How much points"? Anything with vehicles then Railguns, railguns, railguns, also pack your crisis suits with plasma rifles, they pop terminators and space marines with no armour save, yet another favorite of mine is the good ol' ion cannon which isn't really much good at anything but MEQ troops and light transports (eg; rhinos), you can be looking at three space marines killed with no armour saves in a turn with just one ionhead.

There are a few things that will do very well against Marines. I have had great success with Sniper drones ( 3 teams in one heavy slot, St6 AP3, so with the units networked marker lights you can hit on 2's, wound on 2's with no saves for marines, 9 shots = alot of dead marines a turn ), Vespids, again AP3 so now saves, Broadsides to pop transports.

Not true, space marines arn't that good, sure they have big guns and big armour but it costs alot. Tau consontrate more on firepower than armour. Here is a tau pulse rifle and a space marine bolter.
Name / Range / Str / Ap / type
Bolter / 24' / 4 / 5 / rapid fire
Pulse Rifle / 30' / 5 / 5 /rapid fire
Lasgun / 24' / 3 / - / rapid fire
Kroot rifle / 24' / 4 / 6 / rapid fire

Your mate's bragging is...lies!

Actually the area I'm in is mostly SMs, most of them space wolves but lots of SMs and I've never lost a match against them, many close fights but never lost a match. As already noted I field sniper drones in 1 support slot (though currently i only own 2 squads but am planning on filling it out with a third, I commonly borrow a 3rd from a local part time tau player); broadsides for popping vehicles and I LOVE my vespid, I have 2 full squads who always host SM bar-b-ques for my kroot...crisis suit team with plasma rifles for up close and a team with twin linked missile pods for long range harassment (plus the twinlinked missiles are cheap...).

I'm trying to get sniper teams myself now, but I'm put off by the BS. Isn't it reg. 4+ and with the marker light (that is IF the marker light itself hits) its a 3+?

Actually i think for the most part your likely to lose as space marines since their so many of them people like me are gearing up to face them specifically all my easiest wins are against space marines.
