Default converted tau player needs help on expanding army

Hey guys I'm KO321 and I was an ork player and now i converted to the complete opposite, the wonderful Tau. Right now I have 1 Devil fish, 12 kroot carnivores, 24 fire warriors a lot of drones,3 crisis suits and 3 stealth suits. I was trying to run either a hybrid list or a mech list. right now i have ordered another crisis suit and I have about 275 to spend on models so i was trying to figure out what to get. I played my friends army and I liked having a stealth team to wipe out squads quick. So any suggestions would be awesome thanks guys.

Well, so far it looks like you got most the basic units covered.

I think next, you should focus on some Heavy support, a hammer head, broadsides, maybe even a skyray, just to get some heavy firepower going.

You'll then want to think about what works best and get more of it.

So i might get one of each and try them out and then go from there. If i do that it would give me my 3 heavy support and you think another 3 crisis suits to fill out my elite. so it looks like i should go for a mech list and maybe some piranhas for my fast attack possibly.

Get two Hammerheads, and more suits, fill out your elites and get an HQ suit. You could also do with more Devilfish (I always like having 3 or 4 on the table but thats' just me). Pathfinders are also a good choice to take, I just converted mine from fire warriors but you could go ahead and pay out the ass for them if you feel like it :funny:, damn metal models

Well, I find that in 1500 points i never fill out all of my slots. Tau units are quite expensive.

If you want Hammerheads, buy the Skyray box. It contains the Hammerhead parts, plus a turret sprue for the 'ray. And it costs the same. If you're wondering why, it's because the Skyray's secondary weapons come on the same sprue as the Hammerhead's primaries.

As for advice... If you don't have the special issue weapons for the Crisis suits, you should acquire the Commander box, which comes with a Crisis suit, the special issue gear that requires modelling, and a couple of head variations. As you can only have one of each SI system in the army, you only need the one.

I personally am a fan of using both suits and mech, with relatively low concentrations of infantry. This tends to lead to a full team or two of fire warriors in Devilfish, kitted out with SMS and a couple of additional upgrades, a small but useful squad of Kroot, a squad of Stealths (which I find very useful in an outflanking role) and a whole bunch of heavy units, in the form of missile pod Crisis suits, Broadsides, and Hammerheads.

We are lacking a bit in the truly powerful unit department, but that's because all the more recent codicies and rules have been troublesome for us. I just grin and bear it, and pile on more railguns.

I generally take:

A HQ suit, lightly kitted out.
2 Crisis units - deathrains and flamers, do keep the action close.
Stealth team of 3
2 hammer heads - rail guns obv
broadside unit
2 firewarrior units in devil fishies, for objective etc.
and a unit of kroot.

I then fill up any points left with some fast attack, maybe path finders and a piranha.

I find if you keep the action fairly spread, making sure you have weapons to take out every type of opponent there is (light/med/heavy infantry, light/heavy vehicles etc, then try to work out weather i will be against a horde army or smaller army, and build around that.

A deathrain is any XV8 with twin linked missile pods. The third hardpoint can be filled with anything, but common choices are flamers, target locks, target array, or black sun filter (to keep it cheap, but the flamer is still better).

The skyray box is actually cheaper than the hammerhead now. I'd suggest getting two of those first. Then try them out with the new army and see what you feel you are lacking. Everyone is different, so we can only tell you what we like.

The scary thing about doing this is that they may leave the Sky Ray relatively untouched for the next codex, but may boost the Hammerhead to "improve" sales.
