I've found my most successful builds tend to have a little of both. A gun line is nice, but the rapid reaction forces of a mobile army really helps have that static line more flexibility and reaction to enemy deployment and attacks. My Crisis Suits and Hammerheads/Warfishes do this well enough for me.

I usually rune a hybrid of ninja/mech/static. Yeah its kinda wierd but i get my deep striking crisis teams when i need them. Everything else is pretty much in devilfish, but i usually keep some pathfinders and broadsides for the static element.

Hybrid Mech is good.

i like a moving gunline of sorts. if i can get away with it i will keep my FW back and shoot the distance but should they come at me il move units in to swarm them. 3 FW squads kept close but with enough distance to avoid large blasts on them all.

tanks and broadsides to back up and get heavy hitters also aiming at anything that can shoot blast markers.

crisis suits with mixed gear to help where needed before finaly using kroot to out flank and shoot from the rear.

overall i advance, it scares alot of people, avoid using devilfish and go for more fire warrior squads than i do crisis suits.

all broadsides and tanks use SMS so even if they have just finished dealing with a problem then they can also concentrate fire on anyone who encroaches on my FW.

I've found that in 5th edition mech is the only way to survive the CC happy armies out there. If it doesn't move 12" (except kroot as throw away units), I won't have it in my army.

I used to be a rabid and successful hybrid army player, but 5th has made cover relative. This means we have to buy tons more non-shooting drones for our suits. PF are now understood by enemy who target them first. Gun line FW are just soft chew toys for everyone even marginally CC effective.

So, mount up with max loadout tanks and transports, minimum infantry squads, DS drones and crisis suits. Yeehaa!

I find that im seeing fewer and fewer people who know how Tau work, as all the newer players to the game tend to be drawn towards the shiny new codexes.

This means that alot of people simply dont know what to target first. Then they get hit by TL BS5 railguns.

i agree with people not understanding them.

people ive played expect the FW to be mushy, and yes they are in CC, but they dont realise the range or strength 5 power. And when you move closer to them they mutter something along the lines of 'im soooo going to chew you up next turn' i simply stay quiet, move a second or 3rd squad closer and then reply with they rapid fire, 2 or 3 squads...24 shots each.

now unless unlucky i can normaly kill off a squad with this tactic, but ive only played against Space Marines and Chaos...so i can not say its a sure thing.

backed up with TL rail guns, smart missile systems and a pimped out Shas'O I have faired extremely well

it is quite funny...then you roll the dice needing 5's and 6's to wound. they laughed the first time at the few wounds until i said 'Oh, by the way, those 6's are AP 1' and then have to show them the codex lol
