Default Flechette Discharger Underrated?

The Flechette Discharger deals a wound to any enemy close to the tank, with a chance of save. With FOF, you go close to the enemy frontlines so you can get out the rapid fire of the FW Pulse Rifles. But since you will be close to the enemy, and they'll try to assault you, it has to go near the Devilfish. Put Flechette Dischargers on it and they may not want to assault, or suffer a wound. I rarely see anyone talk about using it, so I believe it is underrated. Is there something I don't know that makes this cheap upgrade useless?

Black Behemoth:

That's not how it works unfortunately. Flechettes only work when you actually perform a tank shock, not just when something assaults your skimmer. So if you were to tank shock and then unload fire warriors for a drop-troop attack, then you'd be risking a lot, because whatever you tank shocked will not be moving very much - only the models that would be under the tank move, making way for the tank to settle, keeping your normal coherency of 1 inch from the tank. That's not much. So when you unload those fire warriors, he will be able to just remove casualties from the furthest away points of his squad, while he's still well within 12 inches of you, even walking around the devilfish, since he begins 1 inch from a side of the skimmer anyways. Effectively, the skimmer won't be able to stop the squad from assaulting the fire warriors in most situations as it puts you just too close to the enemy. The only way it would really be more effective is if the enemy squad failed Moral and actually had to fall back, which may also put them outside of rapidfire range with the fire warriors. So either way, it's really not a good deal for the Fire Warriors.

Cheers!

Although that is true, it says in the Codex that they go off whenever someone goes near them. I think they should go off if you tank is assaulted aswell.

In the fluff, yes the Flechettes would discharge anytime someone hostile came close.

However, in the rules it specifically states that it does one thing and one thing only, and that it only triggers in a tank shock, and even then, only when someone elects to perform a Death or Glory. That's literally the only time it can be used.

But believe me, I'd love to just cause everyone armor saves all the time going near them Oh well... rules are rules!

Cheers!
