Default Flying high?

Can anyone specify the way flying high works? I know it enables all vehicles to have line of sight on you reguardless of intervening terrain, does it work the other way around? Do you have to spend your movement to get up high? Do you count as having moved 12 inches for firing/'can only glance skimmers'? Does it affect the range of your weapons and the range nessecary to shoot you? I'm curious as to how this will play out with my three rail heads and if I could have my emptied fish hovering 4 feet over the table while their seeker's get fired.

Skimmers can choose to interact with the terrain below them, or not. You don't assume any height depending on the terrain you are on, because they are already size 3.

Literal height isn't used in 40k.

hhmm, i'm not quite sure what it is that you are asking. In 2nd edition there was "High Flying", which was a sort of re-usable uber accurate deepstrike ( back in the days when swooping hawk exarchs with melta bombs would terrorise any piece of armour on the battlefield *sigh*)

In 4th edition, movement is measured both horizontally and vertically for the purposes of navigating difficult terrain with infantry. Skimmers however just move laterally at sufficient height to avoid intervening terrain.

as far as i am aware there is no benefit in having any sort of skimmer 4 feet in the air, let alone a transport.

Codex: Cityfight contains rules regarding both benefits from being higher than your target and for the skimmer situation you describe. Under those rules, i believe that a skimmer may be targeted by all units within range, even without LOS, if that skimmer ends its movement phase above building which is not designated as a rooftop at the beginning of the battle.

By the way, i suggest every Tau player should give cityfight a go. It makes for some very tense and close run games. Just don't ever get caught in an assault!

I'm sure a little nose through the Big Black Book should help to sort this misunderstanding out.

Oh how I yearn for the days of Battletech...

I hate the terrain "rules" in Warhammer; if I down a skimmer over impassable water, the damn thing should sink, not still be at level three! AH!!!

Sorry for that...

I'll have to give Cityfight a go if I ever get time; sure would kill those stupid LOS problems, it sounds like.

So for cityfight only you can put your skimmers so high up that everyone has los on them and they have los on everyone else?

Well yes and no. From what I understand, you will ignore the terrain under you (let's say a forest) but you do not gain any additional size. So if say a land raider is behind a size three terrain feature, and you choose to "skim" over the size three terrain near you then it still cannot target you until it gains line of sight.

Models count as the terrain size they occupy, and since vehicles are already 3 - skimming over "blocking" terrain doesn't do anything except expose them to fire.

You cannot "rise above" structures. If there is a size 3 building between you and your opponent, you do not have LOS, even in a skimmer. Your only option is to move on top of the intervening terrain, in which cas you may fire and be fired at as normal.
