Default Fish of Fury Invalid Tactic

:'(

Picked this off the GW website from from Tim "Hivemind" Huckleberry (GW rule expert) (sp?)

Q. When Tau use landing gear and land, do they still
count as skimmers, and thus do not block line of sight, or since they are on the ground, they would?

A. Landed or immobilised skimmers block LOS normally

Although the enemy could not charge you then cannot use of the Fish of Fury to rapid fire into your enemy because the devilfishes block line of sight.*Any thing in the codex or rules that counters this?* Thanks,

Jesse

when Imobilized the FoF won't work, that is correct. But as long as the Devilfish is mobile it's considered to be floating approx 3 feet off the ground or there abouts.

But if it is dropping off troops it has to land. At that point it would be blocking line of sight and the fire warriors could not shoot into any enemy in front of the devilfish. Tim Huckleberry seems to think that if it lands than LOS is blocked. I cannot think of any other time it would land except to drop off troops.

THanks,

I don't know what to say, but the picture on the Devilfish box depicts fire warriorsjumping out of a still hovering devilfish.

The landing gears are optional upgrades that can be given to a DF. It does not need them, or even have to use them to load or unload a group of FWs.
It's the same with any skimmer. Eldar and Dark Eldar don't have landing gears, but they do fine with their troop transporting without them.
The idea is that the transport hovers close to the ground and the troops jump out. In a rapid combat situation like 40k battles, landing is generally a bad idea, as it makes both the vehicle and the troops vulnerable.
Take Vietnam as an example. The transport-copters had trouble because when they tried to retrieve their troops, the enemy soldiers would just ambush them as they touched ground, giving them maximum time to aim and shoot at vital points, and letting them shoot it down with simple fire arms. The idea applies to skimmers as well, as the rely on speed as their main defence, and stopping to unload detracts from this. They minimalise the time when immobile, so then they can quickly move out of the way. Hovering lets them do this, while actualy landing takes longer to start up again, which is why you have the option of not doing this. Landing gears are entirly optional, as they're not even in the codex, only in the chapter aproved as an option.

Where does it list landing gear as optional upgrades?

Thanks,

... If you cant jump 3 ft, dont bother coming onto a battlefield unless you plan to stand infront of us ;D

Anyway, because the tactic is used EVERYWHERE. And because nobody has ever found a rule which states: Devilfishes cant *blah blah blah*. Then we are all free to use it! ;D

And its such a deadly tactic too >

I dont think it has any landing gear. Seeing as the model only has the 4 engine thingies on the bottom. Assumedly it would land without landing gear, by hovering slowly down, then touching the surface.
