Default A moment of nostalgia: WD 262.

In October 2001, WD262 was a day all on this board should remember, for this was the WD that the Tau were released.

My, how far we've come.

After prying myself away from the Steam Tank rules (Hey, I'm a tread head!), we can admire the glorious concept sketches, the guide to how they made the Devilfish, and the legendary Index Xenos article. We even got rules for Firewarrior squads, letting us have some minor skirmishes with these new bad-boys!

My, how far this army has come...

Have we really come that far? I was looking at 263 today (ironically enough) which features the Tau Vs Tyranids. It's quite a funny feeling to see what we have now, but it's also hard to bite back on the urge to scream for a new codex with updated Drone rules and reasons why Crisis Suits should be better than Stealths, which IMO they should be. They, for me, were the defining Tau unit. But as of late I think "Meh, I'll take a Death Rain to supprt my El's and then I'll beef up on Stealths". It shouldn't be like this IMHO but it is. It's nice to be reminded just how amazing we thought Fire Warriors to be back then...

"Omg a basic Troop choice with 36 range and Strength 5? Might as well call it Tauhammer.."

Fire warriors *are* awesome. Can many other 10 point basic troops shoot holes through 11 armor vehicles and hit toughness 7 creatures?

I do agree though, and outside of shooting rhinos or terminators, crisis suits are wholly outclassed by stealth suits on the field.

It was a real shame when I joined the hobby. I had come into it at WD 268, Skaven, MkIIc Rhino and th Horus Heresy fluff. I flicked through thinking two things...

1: Why had I just wasted money on a magazine for a silly game I could never be convinced to play (oh I ate those words alright)

2: What are those cool looking space suit things? (Four Cadres featured in Aus WD) (btw see? eating those words ^... mmm yummy... pass the tomato sauce please...)

I was shocked to see the army I'd eventually love being released just before I knew the WH way... oh well, I played catchup...

is there any way to read those articles? My earliest WD is 283. Are they online, anywhere, or does someone have them on their PC? I'd love to read them.

"What warriors of men can stand beside the Space Wolves! The Sons of Fenris they are, hardened in the forge of their harsh world, eager for battle and honour. They are the grey warriors, ashen like the wolf, whose greatest joy is to hear the clamour of steel amidst the din of war. None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. Through the storms of the warp they come, upon the very tides of terror, but of such dangers they are uncaring. They are the Space Wolves, the Undefeated, the bane of the Emperor's foes."

Dude! That was the first issue I got, and I thought exactly the same thing! Out of that issue, the 4 diff cadres and the rhino got my attention.. (its actually issue 267 but anyway) - and the Army of the month section featuring tau..

262 doesn't seem like that long ago to me...my first White Dwarf was 213, and I'd been playing nearly a year before I started buying them.

I still have them all as well. Well, bar one. I lost it somewhere
