Default I don't understand the Positional Relay

I don't understand the rule exactly. So if I want to deep strike my crisis suites on the 2nd turn all I have to do is roll a 2+ right? So does that mean that only that team of crisis suits can deep strike and nothing else in my army on that turn?

If that's the case; then why bring it along? what is the major pro of the relay? the 2+?

trying to make a Mech-Tau army.

The real use of the positional relay is either a Ninja list, focused around denying targets, or in guaranteeing a certain unit on demand. In a mech list, it's probably not worth it unless you need to land some Crisis units, pronto.

On the rule, you select a single unit in your army. That unit may deploy on a 2+. No other unit may be deployed.

The main benefit is actually holding all but the one unit in reserve until desired.

Indeed, the position relay allows you to bring in a unit you really need with minimal chance of failure, but it also allows you to hold units in reserve. By only bringing in a single unit each turn you use it, other units can be strategicly and safely held back until you need them. An example of this would be keeping a kroot carnivore squad in reserve until later in the game when you want them to outflank on an objective or conveniently positioned unsuspecting enemy unit.

Indeed. Looking through, this Tactica explains the Ninja style. http://forums.tauonline.org/index.ph...c,82708.0.html

I use it like a weapon system, truth be told (I hate playing Ninja style). I keep a couple of specialist drop-teams and call them to the field whenever and wherever they are needed.

I like the positional relay a lot for making sure my units don't die so quick. What I don't like is 50% of my rolls with that thing have been 1's when I absolutely needed a deepstriking unit right then.

I used one in a pretty successful army which had a Barracuda in it. The chief reason was to ensure the 'cuda arrived at the first available opportunity. Without it, the army simply would not have worked as I could have been in real danger of playing the first half of a game more than 200pts down on my opponent.

In that regard, if you have a key unit that needs to arrive early then its useful.

As mentioned already, it's also of use when you want to deny your opponent key forces. You will need to have some units that prepare the battlefield... these might be difficult to kill (such as stealths that outflank and hide) or sacrificial (such as small drone units). These will be the ones that you bring on in the first few turns while the rest of your army bides its time.

By the third or fourth turn your reserves will be coming on more readily, so you can be more guaranteed (though not certain) that you can flood the field with your forces.
